Facilitators and "Limbic Leaks"
All facilitators know how important it is to continually pick up a group's non-verbal cues. Yet how many subtle messages do we miss?
Joe Navarro, ex-FBI Special Agent, provides the concept of "limbic leaks." These are messages that come straight from the subconscious and speak as loudly as words.
The next time you lead a meeting, watch for these limbic leaks. They indicate signs of discomfort:
- Covering the neck dimple, including fiddling with buttons or shirt collar.
- Eye blocking; covering the eyes.
- Neck, cheek or face touching.
- Fingers interlacing to run up and down.
If you see these messages, what should you do? Is it necessary to intervene? This article will help you decide.
