When to Communicate in Person
Have you ever taken offense at an e-mail, even if its message wasn't offensive? How about on a conference call?

When we can't read peoples' body language, our limbic (emotional) brain fills in details we miss. Those details may be flat-out wrong. We may end up reacting to a different message to the one sent!

The following chart may help you decide when to meet in person.

In Person: Not Necessary
if the message is:
  • Simple
  • Information
  • Data
Probably Best In Person
if the message is:
  • Complex
  • Conversational
  • Emotional
Have a Meeting, Lose Weight
feet on treadmillSalo, a Minneapolis-based financial firm, set up treadmills with height-adjustable work surfaces in a circle. Employees face each other and walk during meetings!

The staff has collectively lost more than 150 pounds since the treadmills were installed. Their cholesterol and triglyceride levels have also dropped.

Many companies are holding "stand-up" meetings--Salo just took this concept further. Moral of the story: Standing up during meetings could improve your health!

Answers to Puzzlers:

1. T. The pattern is the first letter of the numbers, One, Two, Three, etc. The last is T for Ten.

2.  X, Y and Z go above the line. The pattern is letters with straight lines go above the line, and letters with curves go below.
