Facilitator Tip
When you run a meeting, it can be very helpful to "hold up a mirror." Simply state what you observe.

Step 1
Begin your observation with statements like:
  • "I'm noticing that..."
  • "It looks like..."
  • "What I'm seeing is..."
Step 2
Then describe what you see without evaluating it:
  • "Three people have left and returned in the last five minutes."
  • "Several furrowed foreheads."
  • "People have become silent."
Step 3
Then, ask for underlying reasons:

"Let's take a look at what's going on."
"What are people thinking right now?"
"What is this telling us?"

By holding up a mirror, you offer the group renewed self-awareness, leading to important breakthroughs in thinking and behavior.

A Great Puzzler
Try this yourself, then use it to WOW any audience.

Choose a four-digit number, with each digit different. Scramble the digits to create a new number. (For example, if your first number is 1234, your second might be 4321.)

Subtract the smaller number from the larger. Then add together the digits of the resulting number. If your sum is one digit, go no further. If your sum is a two-digit number add the two digits together.

Your number is 9.
