Brush Up Your Presentation Skills
How to Get Those Heads Nodding
As a presenter, you can evoke affirming head-nods from your audience.

First, read the reaction of each person. If you see quizzical looks, try using these phrases:
  • "In other words..."
  • "What that means is..."
  • "Another way to look at this is...
  • "Research shows that...."
  • "The reason this is important to you is..."
(Thanks to Jerry Weissman for these tips.)

Tongue-Twister "Hook" Challenge
The "sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick" is said to be the toughest tongue twister in the English language. Can you use this a the basis for a "Hook" for one of your presentations?

Send me your ideas. I will pick the top three winning Hooks! Remember, the criteria for a great hook are:
  • relevant to your topic (you make it so!)
  • involves emotion, even if minor
  • everyone in your audience must be able to relate in some way

Ben Stein on Facilitation Skills
This guy's my favorite "combo plate." He's a self-proclaimed lawyer, writer, actor, and... economist! Here's what he has to say about face-to-face meetings:

"Could Congress really do its work if it held its sessions by teleconferencing? Could the Supreme Court? Nothing can replace the spark of intelligence that travels from person to person at meetings."

I discover over and over again that good facilitation skills underlie all effective meetings, whether in-person or electronic. Do you agree? Tweet me your response!
