I enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 2010, and in December of 2010 earned a contract to go to Navy Diving School after boot camp! I enjoy working with my hands and using all kinds of power tools, and I have always loved the idea of working underwater so I thought trying out for the diving program was definitely worth a shot. The first step was to take a physical screening test, which consists of swimming 500 yards using the combat side stroke in under 14 minutes, doing at least 42 push-ups in under 2 minutes, 50 sit-ups in under 2 minutes, and running 1.5 miles in under 12 minutes 40 seconds. I felt very confident until I found that although doing these numbers would pass, they were not enough to get a contract. Once I actually passed, my scores were put up against the scores of other candidates around the nation. The people with the top scores would be accepted and I took the test three times until I was finally picked!
Once I'm done with diving school I will have the opportunity work in numerous specialties. To be honest I am not sure which way I will go once I'm done. It would be nice to do deep submergence diving and research, as well as salvage and recovery missions, but right now I'm just focusing on getting through my upcoming initial training. I have enjoyed the three years I spent working at Dental Salon SO much, and I will miss everyone I've come to know here. I wish the staff of Dental Salon the best, and hope that every patient I came to meet had a wonderful experience!

Dr. Weisz Home From Africa!
I'm back from Africa with many lessons learned and stories to tell. The food was heavy on plain starches like white rice and potatoes, but the outpouring of love was beyond what we expected! We were treated like family, receiving greetings and thanks everywhere we traveled. The dentistry there is nothing like what we experience here at Dental Salon. We should all feel blessed to have such a great office here in Chicago, providing some of the best dental care in the world.
Upon arriving in Uganda, I was initially concerned as to how we were going to make due without electricity or running water and still help people. That problem was quickly solved and we laid the groundwork for what turned out to be my greatest learning experience to date. We take so much for granted in our day-to-day life here at home. As dentists, we take great pride in disease prevention, six-month checkups, x rays, cleanings, and gum treatment. Simple necessities like brushing teeth and flossing just do not exist in the areas of Africa where we were stationed. The majority of the population go through their lives with aching dental pain all day, every day with no dentists there to help.
The most fulfilling part of our trip did not even come from the countless individuals who's pain we were able to alleviate. Our mission to educate the villagers - especially young people about how to prevent cavities and keep teeth healthy will prove to be the most rewarding. We taught the basics in schools, health clinics, and literally right on the streets. Leaving behind a sustainable program where the local school teachers, acting as our new dental ambassadors, now have the knowledge and ability to ensure that the next generation have the tools and skills to prevent dental disease before it becomes painful and life threatening. When we go back, we hope to go back to far less toothaches and many more toothbrushes!
