Control Catalog Clutter Catalogs pile up over the holidays, then swamp mailboxes in the new year as all the retailers where you shopped add your mailing address to their mailing lists. Put a stop to that by refusing to provide your address or phone number when you shop at the mall. If you place your order by phone, tell the operator to keep your name off the company's mailed catalog lists. Or ask one of these organizations to contact catalog companies on your behalf with a "cease and desist" order. |
Christmas Trees
Looking for a Christmas tree that's green in spirit as well as appearance?
- Google "organic, locally grown Christmas tree in ..." and plug in the name of your state or county.
- Search Green Promise. This website lists organic Christmas tree growers in several states.
And when the holiday is over, here's how you can recycle your tree.

Lights & Candles
We used to put real candles on our Christmas tree, but we noticed people would gravitate towards the door when we lit them, just in case everything went up in flames! We switched to holiday lights and candles. And now we've switched again, to highly energy-efficient LED lights and candles made from beeswax, not paraffin. Here's what you need to know about both, and links so you can find them.

Gift Wrapping
You could spend almost as much money on wrapping paper and ribbon as you do on the presents themselves. Why waste the cash -- or the natural resources? My favorite "wrapping paper" is a reusable cloth bag, a lovely kitchen towel, or a delightful scarf, secured not by tape, but by reusable ribbon or twine. For gift tags, I often use the front half of last year's holiday cards - works like a charm! Here are more ideas, plus links to wrapping made from recycled paper if that's still your preference.

COPENHAGEN
Many thanks to all of you who voted for me to become the Huffington Post Citizen Ambassador to the climate talks in Copenhagen. I was overwhelmed and gratified by your support. And in fact, I received more endorsements than any other candidate!
Ultimately, the contest judges chose David Kroodsma, a climate scientist who has biked more than 21,000 miles to raise awareness about climate change. I wish him the best as we all continue to do our part to use energy more efficiently. Meanwhile, here's an overview I wrote on how climate change affects women. Let me know what you think.
