One in a Million
Thousands of women have joined the Big Green Purse "One in a Million" campaign. How? By pledging to shift $1,000 of their annual household budget to products and services that offer the greatest environmental benefits.

Once a million women shift their $1,000 (by spending differently, not spending more), we'll have a billion dollar eco-impact on the marketplace, resulting in direct environmental benefits like cleaner air and water and less global warming.

Deborah H. from Nashville, Tennessee and the mother of two young boys, is the latest "Millionaire." Here's how she shifted over $1,000:

* Joined a Winter CSA - $704.50

* Bought Bamboo Sheets - $ 93.77

* Joined a Spring CSA - $400.00

Total .............................. $1,198.27

Why did she do it?

"I joined One in a Million because I received an e- mail from the women's list-serve at my church (Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, TN) about the good things your group was doing," she says.

"Thinking about the campaign has impacted how I buy. We use bamboo sheets on our beds, we recycle, and we belong to a CSA (to get locally grown and organic food). My husband bikes to work when he can. We car pool with another family for school and we donate extra funds to our electric company for green energy."

eco friendly shoes
Eco-fashion can be so frustrating. Most "green" styles are either frumpy or frou-frou, and it's hard to find anything that fits. Simple Shoes has come to the rescue with comfy, stylish and affordable "Toepaz" slip ons.

What makes them so eco? Hemp or organic cotton uppers, recycled rubber soles, bamboo and organic cotton liners, but no animal products.

Wear them to the movies, the PTA, or a business casual function. At least, take a look at the website; the tongue-in-cheek copy will make you chuckle. I spent a few too many minutes playing with the magnifying glass (you'll have to check it out to see what I mean). $75; ground shipping is free.

NOTE: I needed a half-size larger than my normal shoe size. You can always measure your foot and call customer service before you order to make sure you get the size right (I hate sending things back, don't you?). The hemp uppers are available in black (shown here) and "cub," a nice darkish khaki color that goes with blue jeans as well as dressier pants. If you want something more colorful, like blue or a red plaid, check out the organic cotton version of the shoe.

organic cotton nightgown
Organic cotton clothes are not only hard to find; they're usually waaaay too expensive. That's why this floor length nightgown, made from 100% organic cotton, seems like such a find. Originally $48, it's on sale for $19 at Gaiam.com.

The sizing on this nightie is "generous" by the manufacturer's own admission. You might want to order a size down. The good news? It sounds like you won't have to worry about shrinkage when you do the laundry.
