Church Leadership Response to the Possible Removal of Father Pfleger
For Immediate Release:
March 17, 2011
For More Information:
Vince A. Clark -773-483-4300
We, as the church leadership of the Faith Community of Saint Sabina, have served in our respective ministries under the leadership of Father Michael L. Pfleger to make not only this parish, but the community in which we are located come to life. We realize that Father Pfleger will not serve as Pastor of Saint Sabina forever. However, considering the current state of the economy, we believe that removing him at this time would be devastating to both our parish and the Auburn Gresham community. We also know that it is Father Pfleger's desire to remain as pastor of Saint Sabina. Further, we feel that as leadership we should be granted the respect of being involved in any process of succession planning for the future of our parish.

Congregation applauds Pfleger, who says he wants to stay at St. Sabina

The Rev. Michael Pfleger assured concerned parishioners at Sunday morning mass that he did not want to leave St. Sabina's but that the decision was out of his hands.
"My life is in God's hands. What happens at St. Sabina's is in God's hands," he said.
Pfleger went on to say that the parish and its Auburn Gresham community will not fall apart if he leaves. He then delivered a Lenten sermon on dealing with life's trials.
However, parishioners were not convinced that losing their longtime pastor would not be detrimental.
"It is just heartbreaking that they want to move Fr. Pfleger," said parishioner Johnnie Money, 67. "He's wonderful and done so much here. I just don't see how they could take him from us."
Last week, Pfleger confirmed that Cardinal Francis George asked him to leave the parish after 30 years, far longer than the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago typically lets priests stay in one place.
