You are cordially invited to the Beyond the Bricks Town Hall Event.
Supported by the Institute for Urban Research @ Morgan State University, Center for Urban Families, and Kinetics' T.R.U.C.E. Movement.
Produced by Washington Koen Media, Beyond the Bricks is a documentary film project and national community engagement campaign created with the goal of promoting solutions for one of America's critical problems in education: the consistently low performance of black males in school. The film includes commentary from some of the country's foremost leaders, experts and scholars focused on black boys and their education.
At the Town Hall meeting we will discuss and plan what we all can do to create healthy communities for our youth. Community leaders, educators, parents, and students from the Baltimore community are strongly encouraged to attend, there will be a screening of Beyond the Bricks
(30 minute run time), a community-panel discussion and planning workshops. The panel discussion is an opportunity for the community to engage in purposeful dialogue concerning the current issues and solutions surrounding black male education. After the community panel discussion there will be planning workshops.

Political prisoner and former Black Panther Eddie Conway's memoir, Marshall Law, comes out this winter and his non-fiction book unearthing the U.S. COINTELPRO program was just published, along with a new compilation of his interviews. Tonight Bashi Rose, Rain Pryor, Marc Steiner, Mama Kay of WombWork Productions, read excerpts from Conway's memoir. Marshall "Eddie" Conway is the former member the Baltimore Black Panther Party. In 1969, he uncovered evidence of the FBI's infiltration of the Panthers as a part of the COINTELPRO initiative, and found himself locked away, just one year later, convicted of a murder he did not commit. Currently in his fortieth year of incarceration in a State of Maryland correctional facility, he has played a leading role in a variety of prisoner support initiatives, including the formation of the Maryland chapter of the United Prisoner's Labor Union, and the ACLU's Prison Committee to Correct Prison Conditions. His memoir consists of four decades of memories experienced within the Maryland prison system. Some selections from the book are beautifully poetic, while others depict the violence of imprisonment and the parallels to slavery.
Guest performances include drumming of Street Delegates, and original hip-hop by The Dri Fish of THE 5th L. An audience Q&A with Conway via phone follows. All three books are on sale to benefit Conway's defense fund. Additionally, a selection of Emory Douglass prints will be on exhibit and for sale. Douglass worked as the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 until the Party disbanded in the 1980s, and whose graphic art has become an iconic representation of the struggles of the Party. .

Kinetics: putting faith in motion
by Lynn Pinder, Baltimore Religion & Politics Examiner
There is a powerful faith movement brewing in Baltimore centered around faith, dialogue and motion. This movement - called Kinetics - is an information ministry founded for the purpose of informing and equipping the faith community with resources to address social justice issues. Like its dictionary definition, Kinetics is about changing the motion of masses.
I had the opportunity to interview Jamye Wooten, the Founding Executive Director of Kinetics and an advisory board member of the National Faith & Justice Network. He is one of several faith leaders in Baltimore working diligently to build a unified group (Kinetics) of clergy, scholars, lawyers, social justice advocates, business owners and nonprofit professionals who are committed - in principles and action - to providing the faith community with the tools to (1) advocate and mobilize on local, national, and international issues; (2) build capacity to solve problems; and (3) use dialogue as a catalyst for social change.

Schott's latest biennial report on Black males and public education, released today, reveals that the overall graduation rate (2007/8) for Black males in the U.S. was only 47 percent. The report shows that out of 50 states, half have graduation rates for Black male students below the national average. In addition to a national summary and detailed state-by-state data, the report highlights the success of New Jersey's Abbott plan, which demonstrates that when equitable resources are available to all students, systemic change at the state level can yield significant results. New Jersey is now the only state with a significant Black population with a greater than 65 percent high school graduation rate for Black male students.
The report highlights concerns over the fact that New York's graduation rate for its Regents diploma is only 25 percent for Black male students. New York City, the district with the nation's highest enrollment of Black students only graduates 28 percent of its Black male students with Regents diplomas on time. Overall, each year over 100,000 Black male students in New York City alone do not graduate from high school with their entering cohort.
The report's findings include:
- The five worst performing districts with large Black male student enrollment are New York City, N.Y. (28%); Philadelphia, Pa. (28%); Broward County, Fla. (39%); Chicago, Ill. (44%) and Nashville, Tenn. (47%).
- The states with Black male student enrollment exceeding 100,000 that have the highest graduation rates for Black male students are New Jersey (69%), Maryland (55%), California (54%) and Pennsylvania (53%).
- The districts with Black male student enrollment exceeding 10,000 that have highest graduation rates for Black male students are Newark, N.J. (76%); Fort Bend, Texas (68%); Baltimore County, Md. (67%) and Montgomery County, Md. (65%)
