Pom Poms for Poems!!
I once read an essay for one of my poetry
courses that a poet wrote about advising his students' poetry. The gist
of the essay was that, consciously or not, he was going to encourage
his students to write more like him. There was no way around it.
I
see the dilemma, but I disagree. In this workshop we're going to look
at why you like your work, why you don't, and how your poem can best be
served. The idea is that your poem lives a separate life-separate from
critique, separate from you, even. As a group, we'll look at what we
think the poem is trying to say, and whether its voice is being
given the opportunity to be heard, or whether it's being muffled,
drowned out, watered down, etc. Everyone will take part actively in
this process.
We'll have themes, topics, and assignments, but
these are to help, not to hinder; feel free to bring in whatever work
you'd like, one poem per week, with enough copies for everyone in the
group. Anyone who writes or wants to write poetry is welcome! The space
will be one where women encourage women to let go, be honest, tell
lies, paint words, makes messes, dance language, fuck it all up, be
relentless. We are poetry cheerleaders! Go Poems Go!
