Winning is a Thrill You Can Share

Greetings!

I got a call from John Ruark today.  Golf Equipment Chronicles readers will recognize John as "The Pilot".  He earned the name.  He used to fly Intercontinental jets.

John has been driving from Marin to the Golf Lab for longer than either of us remembers - at least seven years.  He started out as a "product tester" - our way of getting hands-on testing results from a pretty average senior.  He built and tested more than 200 custom clubs over the years.

Actually, he's not all that average.  He's about 5'7" and weighs in under 150 with his jeans on.  That's the yogurt and flax seed kicking in.

We went to the PGA Merchandise show one year and roomed together.  We've played dozens of "mornings at the muni".  Over the years, John became a "student of the game".  About a year ago, he started to work with David Balbi - refining his technique.

He was an early AimPoint adopter.  One round this summer he had eleven putts in nine holes.  He was justifiably proud of that.  John worked to get better.

John is a member of the San Geronimo men's club.  Their club tournament was last weekend.  John went into the second day eight down and then the weather hit.  That's when his next discipline kicked in - the ability to play steady golf under any conditions.  Mental preparation.

He won the Senior Division.  That was on his "Bucket List" - not quite as high as shooting his age.  He's getting closer on that too, John broke 80 this year.

John is bringing his trophy to the Golf Lab.  He wants it to live where other plalyers can see it and we agree.  Winning trophies is great and looking at trophies isn't all that bad.   If you've got a trophy you'd like to put on display we've got a perfect home for it.

By the way, John is 74.

Closeout Sale Continues this Weekend

Last weekend was a huge success for us.  We sold a lot of what we wanted to sell (not all).

But more important, we discovered a great way to run a sale.  All of the clubheads are in bins.  If you're thinking about a certain driver head with a certain loftn and face angle, we can match the specs.  There's no junk, these are the top lines.  We've got low loft, high loft long drive and tour heads.  Over 200 driver heads are in inventory.

Then we have the "shaft wall".  And, "Karnak the Shaft Fitter" is coming back.  We built over 60 custom clubs in just one day.  Players were choosing very good matched sets of fairways with ACCRA, Fujikura, Mitsubishi, Matrix, Aerotech, Graffaloy and Oban Shafts.  For once, a sale club came with a fitted shaft.

How good were the prices?  Very good.  For example an Adams Speeder that was $299 when it came out with a stock shaft went for $150 with a Fujikura Speeder 757.  The 757 is an "oldie but goodie" that sold for $300 two shaft generations ago.  The good news?  That's still a great driver that can go into any good player's bag.

I'm thinking that we might be on to something.  There's so much good merchandise sloshing around in the distribution channel that great values are popping up.  For example, this weekend we found a great buy on golf gloves.  I'm a glove snob, usually choosing the Foot Joy leather - at about $17 each.  On Saturday, we'll have a "doorbuster" on gloves.  Three very nice leather gloves for $20.  That's not the greatest bargain in the world but at least you'll make back your gas money.

Watch for specific listings.

Celebrities Coming to Town

This is an opportunity that has never been offered before.  Stay tuned for details next week.

Next Saturday, Mr. Miura - founder of Miura Golf - will visit the Golf Lab with his executive team including new president Adam Barr.  You'll remember Adam from the Golf Channel where he reported on equipment for seven years.  We are excited to see Miura choose a well-known golf industry profesional to lead the company.

This is more than a "meet and greet".  All customers will have a chance to discuss style, weight and custom grinds with Mr. Miura and have the irons ground at "Wheel Number One".  The irons you order on Saturday will carry Mr. Miura's own "maker's mark".

We will surely have some great Miura keepsakes even if you're still stuffing your piggy bank for Miura irons.

See you Saturday?

We're closed Wednesday, Thanksgiving and Friday.  Open at Palo Alto for the sale again on Saturday.   Stop by if you have time.

Come on down to Palo Alto this Saturday and poke around the Old Golf Lab.

2011 is around the corner.   Prepare to play better.

Best Regards,

Leith Anderson and David Balbi
