It's been a busy summer moving out of the old shop after eight years in Palo Alto and setting up the "next generation" Golf Lab in San Carlos. We're almost done. The Palo Alto location will close on December 20th. Clint will be moving after Thanksgiving. We plan to run a couple of "sidewalk sales" to distribute the things that won't be going with us to our loyal customers. If there's an object that you've been coveting, stop by. All but some of the shop equipment is for sale.
Now with "time on my hands" I can return to fitting golf clubs and writing the Golf Equipment Chronicles. The next generation of diagnostic electronics and components is exciting. I don't believe the "nothing new" attitude. There have been fascinating breakthroughs in technology and comprehension.
The substance of the Golf Equipment Chronicles has always focused on independent equipment testing. I believe in "agnostic" when it comes to equipment. There's a good reason for that. If you sell your heart to one name brand, they will surely disappoint you - sooner or later. We'll always recommend "whatever works".
"Best of Breed" happens every year. Think about it. Out of the thousands of drivers you've seen and heard about, which ones do you remember? The Jesse Otiz' Orlimar Hip Ti from 1991 was the winner that year and still performs with the best. The original Taylor Made R7, SMT Deep Bore, Nike Tour Square, Super Quad, Adams "Dual Can" - are all classics that you can play today without giving anything away.
There is no such thing as a driver that doesn't conform to the laws of physics. But there definitely is one head and one shaft combination that I want to test against your current gamer.
The testing will use our brand new Flightscope "Prime". Indoor radar has finally come of age after ten years in development. Can you believe that we were touting our $15,000 first generation Flightscope in 2005? Alas, it never worked. The third generation wireless unit works beautifully. That, by itself, is worth seeing.
If we get good numbers indoors, we'll give you the driver to hit outdoors. Never, ever believe launch monitor numbers without visual confirmation. Our mantra: indoor testing, outdoor confirmation.
As usual in a "Donate your swing to science" program, the testing is free. You'll need to set aside an hour. An appointment is required.
Once I test my driver and shaft idea with twenty five players, I'll know if the driver works. Then, I'll know the kind of player the driver works for. Finally, I'll know why.
That's the point.
