Recession Strategy Specials
Every once in a while, a great deal comes along.
We've been in close contact with one of the premium
graphite shaft manufacturers in the world - Graphite
Design. For several years, their GAT iron shaft has
been the top graphite iron shaft on the world tours -
primarily the Senior Tour. They sold for a bundle: $48
wholesale, $90 installed. Now, it turns out that a very
rare steel mesh that they used in manufacturing the
GAT shafts has become unavailable. So, the GAT is
being discontinued. We were able to line up a special
purchase of the remaining inventory. While they last,
we're offering the GAT shafts installed in your irons -
with a quick fitting to make sure you get the right flex -
for just $299. Last year, you would have paid $720 for
exactly the same thing - without the "insurance"
fitting. Repeat: while they last.
If you're thinking a new set of irons, refer to last
week's "Recession Strategy" newsletter. We'll build
you a set of Mizuno's or Bridgestone's, lightly used
with custom shafts, GAT or Aerotech, to your exact
specs for just $110 per club (average, depending on
condition). High performance custom for the same
price as "off-the-rack". Why not?

The Best Driver in the World? Challenge Your Driver this Saturday.
Thanks for reading this far. You've earned a "scoop".
It's the "new driver season". We've uncovered one
model that has a chance to be the "Best Driver in the
World". It's the Adams Speedline. The Speedline
was a mentioned in the Golf Digest Hot List and the
comment was: "Adams might be on to something".
They didn't bother to figure out what that might be. It
got a gold mention in the "under $350 category". If you
relied on the Hot List, the Speedline would be way
down on your list.
Golf Magazine "gets it". If you're a subscriber to Golf
Magazine, you'll see it on the cover of the February
issue. The magazine isn't out yet but when you put a
product on the cover, it's usually accompanied by a
positive review.
Here's what I know: when the Adams sales rep first
came by the shop in early January, we put the
Speedline into the hands of a 40 year old woman who
had a measured ball speed of 114 MPH with her
driver. With the Speedline, her ball speed increased
five MPH to 119 MPH.
On Friday, January 9th, we received a pre-release
version of the Speedline. I shafted it up for an
afternoon nine holes with an old Golf Lab friend, Emily
Childs, her sister Carly and dad John. On two drives, I
outdrove John who is fifteen years younger and a lot
stronger than me. He was hitting the Nike Sumo
Tour. I would have been quite satisfied if he outdrove
me by five steps but there's nothing better than being
the (unexpected) winner.
On Saturday, January 10th we tested several Golf Lab
customers who walked into the Golf Lab randomly. In
all cases, they tested for a higher ball speed with our
Achiever launch monitor.
Here's what we think: the "story" behind the
Speedline is "aerodynamics". The shape is clearly
different with a sculpted bottom. It's a little smaller
than the standard 460 cc but the look from the top is
pure classic. It is pretty likely that Adams is truly "on to
something". I think that the Speedline has a chance to
be the "Driver of the Year" in 2009.
I'm not exactly out on a limb here. Here's an email
from Max Puglielli of the Adams Tour Staff forwarded
by our sales rep. See for yourself what the Adams
players are saying:

Adam's Press Release
The really interesting thing is that you don't have to
wait to find out if the Speedline works for you.
This Saturday, we're staging the "Speedline Driver
Challenge". Bring in your driver. We'll test you with
our Achiever launch monitor for ball speed. Then,
we'll set the Speedline up with a shaft that fits your
specs and test again. We'll compare ball speeds.
You'll know immediately if the Speedline gives you
better ball speed than your current driver. The ultimate
measurement for distance is ball speed.
Just to make it worth your while, if the Speedline
doesn't give you higher ball speed, we'll hand you a
sleeve of Titleist ProV's because we wasted your
time. You can't beat that deal.
If you want to reserve a time to make sure we're ready
to go and you don't have to wait on line, call the Golf
Lab and we'll set aside a 15 minute test just for you.
We're not charging a fee for the "Challenge" but if you
find that the Speedline beats your current driver, we're
going to ask for a $25 contribution to the junior golf
program at the Palo Alto Muni. That's fair.

Remember, if you haven't been fitted for
counterweights, you can still do that for no charge.
Call the Golf Lab for an appointment. (650) 493-
1770.
I'll be starting up "Mornings at the Muni" as soon as it
warms up a little more. Plan to meet up for nine holes
and plenty of golf talk.
Best regards,
