Greetings!

This weekend the "Golf Lab Gang" will be at the Northern California Golf Show at the San Mateo Fairgrounds.

The Show opens on Friday morning. That's when the early birds swarm the Golf Mart booth looking for bargains. After bargain hunting, when you start thinking about improving your golf game, plan to spend some time with the Golf Lab.

We have an outstanding lineup of products and services. We'll also entice our customers - those who come to the show and those who don't - with some early season specials to get your game off to a good start in 2008.

If you can't make it to the Golf Show, all of the specials are good in the shop. But don't wait - the specials expire on St. Patrick's Day.

 State of the Art Fitting

The major theme of the show is "Fitting". We have received our "Nike 360 Fitting System" so you can test any Nike driver with any shaft that they offer. The "360 Fitting System" is based on the Burrows Golf patent. We have been pretty high on the Nike SUMO2 - 5900 - this year's "high moment of inertia" leader.

We don't believe in random whacking. That's a waste of time. So, for all of our customers' testing pleasure, we will have our Achiever Launch monitor backed up with the EDH KUDO radar based system. For the first time in the Bay Area, you will be able to see how the radar-based launch monitor works and compare it to the more traditional Cheetah system. Test any Nike Driver and any custom shaft and know your results.

More important, we also have received a few pre- release adapters that will allow you to exchange any head and any shaft. For around $30 you can use your current driver and test it with a variety of shafts. The major companies, Callaway and Taylor Made - are offering an exchangeable head and shaft system that will cost you about $1000 if you fit two or three shafts with a head. The "Universal" system is the same fun, less money.

Buying a random head and shaft without launch monitor testing is an act of faith. Why risk your money when you can know for sure? There is no longer any reason to buy first, find out later.

The one thing that you need to know is "how about feel?" At the show, you can test several of the most popular, high performance heads with several of the high performance shafts and see for yourself if the exchangeable shaft system affects feel. This is absolutely the first chance that any players will have to test the new "Universal" system. One thing to know: The parts are going to be in short supply for two or three months due to extraordinary demand. We have our first shipment locked in - but there won't be many for sale. If you're thinking about building out your own "open market" driver system - see us at the show, satisfy yourself that the performance leaves nothing on the table and get your order in.

We think that exchangeable shafts and heads are going to be enormously popular in 2008 - especially the option that gives you the chance to use the clubs that you already own. Plus, we'll have hundreds of shaft options that can be tested for performance first, and then purchased to fit your own driver head.

There is one technical detail to consider. The adapters add weight to the head - increasing swingweight. They also have a tendency to raise the center of gravity of the head. It is quite likely that to get best performance from some heads, it will be necessary to cut the hosel down by half an inch or so. This is new technology so even we don't know all the answers - yet.

Then, think about fairways and utilities. Exchangeable shafts will work for them as well. One of the most difficult fitting choices is finding the right shaft for your utilities. The new systems will make that much easier.

 Professional Instruction

One of our long-time partners in helping players improve their technique is Eric Jones. Eric won the World Senior Long Drive Championship in 2003 and finished "third in the world" last year. He founded the Seaver Golf Academy at Poppy Ridge. He has invented a unique program. Eric's "coaching" program lasts for three months. You play a round of golf with Eric every month - allowing him to see your game on the course. Every week, Eric schedules open practice sessions at Poppy Ridge. There is no better way to combine on course strategy with intensive, supervised practice.

Eric and his partner, Rick LaForette will be at the Golf Show all three days. They will be delivering their trademark "mini lessons" - to give you a flavor of how your technique measures up to modern standards.

You won't have to use your imagination. We also have the Impractis video training system at the booth. The Impractis system is fabulous. You can record your session and save the data on a memory stick. When you get home, you can download the analysis software from the Impractis website. You have access to all of the power of the Impractis system from your own home computer. You record and track your improvement. Discount access cards will be available at the show. Eric and Rick's mini lessons incorporate the Impractis video system. Bring a memory stick and you can get started with your improvement program at the show.

And, you can see Eric deliver his entertaining presentation about how to hit the ball 350 yards in the air on the Main Stage.

 "Bleeding Edge Technology"

John Johnson is a professional golfer and the founder of Tour Lock Golf. He is an innovator and a deep thinker when it comes to unconventional ideas about changing the performance of golf equipment.

John will be at the Golf Lab booth on Friday and Saturday. He will be installing his unique counter weight system in a variety of test drivers. If you want to bring in your own driver for "tweaking" feel free.

The Tour Lock system is a weight that can be located down the shaft, below the hands to increase moment of inertia. This is definitely "bleeding edge" technology. If you want to see for yourself if altering the balance of your own driver can improve performance, you can do that at the Golf Lab booth.

Then, you can turn your attention to putters. John has a new shaft and weighting system that is also ahead of its time. If you want to meet and talk to one of the true "wild and crazy guys" you've got to meet John Johnson at the Golf Lab booth.

If you want to see how the Tour Lock system works, bring your driver to the show and we'll test it for ball speed, tweak it for balance and then test it again. You'll see if the new ideas work for yourself.

 Penneagle Putters - Putting Pros

Tim Durgin will be in attendance for the third year. Tim has an extraordinary line of putters - Penneagle - his own boutique putter company. Penneagle putters feature inserts and balance weights that are truly different. Plus, Tim is a personality himself.

As usual, there will be a "Show Special". Tim's Penneagle putters sell all over the world for $179. At the Show, they will be $100. You can choose your new Penneagle putter and get some Tour Lock counterweights installed on the spot.

You can even get some putting tips from our resident short game Guru, Heather Hughes on Saturday and Sunday.

 Early Season Specials

We will have a short-term incentive discount on our fitting services for Golf Show Attendees. For any attendee who books an appointment at the show - and reserves the spot with a credit card commitment - we will take $100 off of our Full Fitting. Or, save $30 on a Driver and Ball fitting. (The special will be honored for the next week for Golf Lab "Members Only" who can't make it to the Show.)

KZG 3 Woods - We made a special purchase on some KZG 3 wood heads. They're the old model with a shallow face - maraging steel for distance. They are reminiscent of the original Orlimar Tri-Metal - a classic shape. We've fitted them out with a selection of good shafts - high performance shafts "saved" from Nike's, Titleists, and Taylor Mades. Each one is measured and marked with its specifications. While Supplies last: $29.

 Spring tune up

Stop by the shop and let us measure the loft and lie of your irons. Then, we'll go through your set and make sure that all of the lies are correct for your swing. That doesn't mean just a "standard" progression. We take our time to test the longest and shortest iron in your set dynamically. Then, we set the lie angles for the rest of the set in progression, testing as we go. At the same time, we'll set the lofts to match the way you play. There are some interesting ways to do that. For example, you might want to separate the long end of your set a little more. We find that a lot of players don't see much difference between their three, four and five irons. Why carry three? Spread out the lofts and save room in your bag for a more useful club.

It takes more time, but it's the right way to do it.

Then, we'll have a good look at your grip. If your clubs are "off the rack" there's a good chance that your grips are too small for your hands. Or, you might find you can improve your feel and consistency by changing the shape of your grip - an extra wrap or two under the right hand is a good way to do that. We'll finish the job by replacing your grips with brand new Golf Pride Tour Velvets or Lamkin Crosslines. The whole job is just $99 on our Spring Special. (We also have the premium grips at a slightly higher price.)
