New Fitting Methods and Offers

The Golf Lab continues to develop state-of-the- art fitting technologies. Our affiliation with Max Out Golf Labs, headquartered in Los Angeles www.maxoutgolf. com, is paying dividends. If you missed the August Golf Magazine article on Mitch Voges and the Max Out Golf Labs fitting methodology, here is a link:

There are new products on the horizon that will be important in 2006. We have always felt that the innovative, niche products deserve out support. Besides, some of them are very good. Check out the frequency-tuned putter shaft.

The off season is a good time to get your bag checked out and test new products when the stakes are low.

Shaft Max
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the most important parameters in club fitting is understanding the load that a player puts on a golf shaft. The conventional wisdom in clubfitting matches swing speed with shaft flex. Over the years, we have found that approach to be wrong. In our “performance based” fitting methodology, we frequently fit senior golfers with stiff shafts, and they find that performance improves. Until now, fitting for flex has been a trial and error method, supported by our launch monitors and a keen eye.
Several years ago, the True Temper Company developed a way to test the load on shafts. Sensors were attached to True Temper shafts to measure the shaft deflection during a player’s downswing. From that information, a shaft fitting recommendation was made. There were several problems with the True Temper system. First, they relied exclusively on shaft deflection to make their recommendation. Second you had to be wired up like a robot to take the test and the test clubs were out of date. Finally, the True Temper Shaft Lab only recommended True Temper products.
The Shaft Max is a similar device, but much more accurate and useful. Invented by Max Out Golf Labs founder, Mitch Voges, the Shaft Max takes clubfitting to a higher level. First, the Shaft Max measures shaft load in two planes, horizontal and vertical deflection which adds the effect of “toe droop”. Second, the Shaft Max is wireless so your swing is not restricted, and the clubs utilized are contemporary models. Finally, the Shaft Max creates a “fingerprint” graph of your swing which gives us invaluable information about your tempo and how you load a shaft. In keeping with Max Out philosophy, recommendations are entirely independent with no brand preference.
We think that the Shaft Max adds a new dimension to our clubfitting services. We tested out the beta system last week with good results while Mitch was in town. If you want to schedule an updated driver fitting for yourself, utilizing the Shaft Max, we will cut $50 off of our driver fitting fee “For Members Only”. Take advantage of this state-of-the-art technology to make sure you are playing the correct shafts in your clubs.
Launch Max
When you fine tune a driver, you have to know the ball speed and spin rate exactly. That is accomplished with high speed photography and sophisticated software that takes two pictures of the ball as it leaves the face of your driver.
The Max Out Launch monitor is precisely accurate. A built in feature is the “optimization routine” which tells you the exact launch angle and spin rate required to give you the maximum carry and roll for your ball speed. For the last several months, we have been using the Max Out launch monitor and the advanced Launch Max software to get outstanding results for Golf Lab customers. We rely on the Launch Max for in our advanced driver fittings.
If you would like to know which ball is the best for you, the Launch Max can help you find out.
If you are wondering about the effect of internal weighting in driver heads, the Max Out fitting methodology provides some enlightenment. We now have a complete set of Max Out test driver heads, in all lofts – each with low, medium and high center of gravity locations. The Max Out system includes a quick change method to test each driver head with a selection of different shafts. Dialing in the perfect launch angle and spin rate frequently requires extensive testing. Utilizing the Max Out fitting clubs, this process is much more efficient.
If you would like to find the perfect driver head specifications and shaft for your swing, give the Golf Lab a ring and schedule an hour of launch monitor time to work with our Max Out fitting clubs to see what we find. Once again, we have an incentive “For Members Only” special deal: $75 – $50 off of our driver fitting fee.
Dartfish Video
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A big part of clubfitting is understanding the idiosyncrasies of each player’s swing. You have to see yourself on video to know your swing today and where you need to improve. Most PGA Professionals agree that video is more important than golf club technology in helping players get better.

The best video system in the business is Dartfish. Dartfish is used in all sports and extensively for training Olympic athletes. The Golf Lab now has Dartfish installed, supported with two video cameras providing front and down the line views of a players swing.

We’re still learning the Dartfish system. For “Members Only” if you don’t mind working with us as we gain experience, we’ll make it worth your while. One hour of state-of-the-art video analysis to match your swing with your golf clubs: $50 - $75 off of our standard rate. This offer is good through December 15th for reservations made before December 1st.

New Adventures of the Balance Boys

Jeff Lindner is a true “Rocket Scientist” who turned his attention to improving the performance of golf clubs. Together with his partner, John Cranston, they created the Balance-Certified company and made counter weights a common method of improving performance – raising ball speed on drivers and changing the balance of putters. Their technology is becoming mainstream. Congratulations on their overnight success after only five years of dedicated effort.

Jeff has a new product, this time a putter shaft developed in partnership with UST and now on the market. The background is available by clicking on the following link:

The idea behind the shaft is that it filters out vibrations that mask the true feedback from the putter. Better feedback permits a player to know better where he is striking the ball on the face. It is a unique product. The only thing like it is the Nippon putter shaft that came out a few years ago but never gained traction.

We have stock of the new putter shafts. Installed on your putter (straight shaft only – for now) $99 – special for “Members Only” – retail price: $125

Try to find some time to stop by during the off season. We’re just one minute off of 101 at Embarcadero in Palo Alto.
