Click here for a video from CBS News about a Corrections Service Robot developed for testing in a South Korea prison.  The robot reportedly can perform numerous functions including a means of remote communications between officers and inmates; observation of inmates, and recognition of inmate behavior, alerting officers to anomalies that can prevent violence or suicide attempts. 
Cell Phone Issues 


 

According to this article from The Gazette, The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correction Services will be piloting Tecore Networks' cell phone managed access system at the Metropolitan Transition Center.   The state will decide whether to expand the program after the pilot.  Click here for the link.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has announced that it has awarded a contract to Global Tel*Link to operate the inmate telephone system as well as a cell phone managed access system.  The first institution will be set up with the managed access system by the end of this year.  Click here for the article that appeared in Government Technology.

This Orange County Register article describes the GPS Monitoring Center operating by the Orange County Probation Department, one of a handful of agency - run monitoring centers in the country.

The Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) in Washington, DC has been using GPS to monitor offenders since 2003  and about 600 offenders are currently in the program.  Click here for an overview of CSOSA's GPS program which appeared online at corrections.com.

Wisconsin has joined several other states in passing legislation that will allow for GPS tracking of domestic violence offenders who violate restraint orders.  Click here for the article that appeared online at wisn.com.

 

 

Alcohol/Drug Detection 


According to this article appearing online at whptv.com  the SCRAM technology is provided a win-win situation for York County in Pennsylvania.  By using the technology on DUI offenders the county has been able to control the jail population and offenders are getting the supervision they need.  Click here to access the article.

The American Probation and Parole Association supports the use of proven technological monitoring devices with impaired drivers when the offender has undergone an alcohol assessment, has been assessed as alcohol- dependent, is involved in a comprehensive alcohol treatment program and has been determined to be high risk for continued impaired driving.

According to this article in Government Technology, two U.S. Senators are calling on the federal government to investigate the emerging practice of employers requiring job applicants to surrender user names and passwords for social lnetworking sites.  Click here to see the article.
