A Great EWGA Boston Partner in 2010!

This season, we welcomed Joe & Leigh's Discount Golf Pro Shop at Pine Oaks as our chapter's marquee sponsor and it's been a terrific season with them.

Since hosting a table at our kick-off event in April, Leigh and Diane Bader, Mark Petrucci, and the whole team at Joe & Leigh's has made a home for our members at Pine Oaks.

At our Gear Up for Golf outing in May, we enjoyed 9 holes of golf, shopping, instruction, and club fitting. Each Monday night this summer, members have played in an informal league at Pine Oaks. In addition, Joe & Leigh's donated the award for our 2010 Chapter Champion.

We hope everyone will think of Joe & Leigh's first when shopping for equipment or apparel or investing in golf lessons. Of their association with the Boston Chapter, Joe says, "It's been great and we look forward to continuing our partnership into the future!"

Handicap Corner:  What is the maximum number of strokes I can take on a hole?

Do you know the answer to this question? If you don't, you might have been short-changing yourself when posting your score. Conversely, you might have been short-changing your playing partners by shaving a stroke or two too many! So let's clear this up.

First, whoever told you the maximum number of strokes you can take on a hole is double the par is wrong - sometimes folks use this rule to speed up play (not a bad idea!). Officially, the maximum number you can take depends entirely on your handicap.

Note that when playing a tournament, you must turn in your actual score to the tournament committee; later, when you post your score to the handicap system, you must apply Equitable Stroke Control (ESC).  However, for most of your rounds (when you are playing more casually) it is smart to stop thrashing around at some point and move on.  You should apply your ESC limits in this case while on the course - pick up and get ready for the next hole.

ESC table
Have you ever noticed this table when you record your score on GolfNet? It's just to the right of the section where you record the date, course, tees, and so forth. It tells you the number of strokes you can take based on your course handicap. To determine your course handicap, you will convert your handicap index for the slope rating of the course you are playing by using a chart available at the course or by using the course handicap conversion table on the USGA site. Often times, your handicap index will put you in the same category as your course handicap, but if your index is near a break point or the course slope is not near the average of 113, it is wise to do this calculation.

Now, let's look at a non-tournament example. Say you have a course handicap of 25. The maximum score you can record on a hole - any hole, regardless of the par - is 8. So... you come to a par 3 water hole.  Off the tee and into the water - not once, but twice. Do you quit the hole and record a 6? Nope. Gotta take an 8.

Now you come to a tricky par 5 with a blind shot off the tee. Beautiful shot, but where the heck is your ball? You get frazzled and one thing leads to another. You just pick up and call it a hole. Do you take a 10? Nope, only an 8.

If you have other questions about equitable stroke or recording the correct score, please contact our Handicap Chair.
