To find out come join us at the Connections Kickoff Brunch where the PGA professionals from Brookline Golf Course will cover how to play:

  • Uphill lies
  • Downhill lies

Our President Welcomes You
to the 2010 Season!

Happy Spring, Boston!

Well, it's hard to believe but our annual Kickoff extravaganza is just a few days away. The winter has been long and wet, but hopefully that means we will have a fabulous golf season, weather-wise! We will definitely have a fabulous season EWGA-wise.

Your dedicated board and team members have been working hard over the winter to plan a great season for you. This year, we'll continue our "give back to our members" theme. Here are a few highlights:

  • Competitive Golf- you asked for it, and we delivered. Look for the inaugural New England Cup in June, a new season highlight, where we get to compete against other New England chapters. We're also planning match play, a Champions Cup, and of course, one of our marquee events, the Chapter Championship. This year, we've moved the venue to Highfields Golf Club in Grafton for two reasons (1) to change it up a bit and (2) to reduce the cost of play for our members. Remember, you don't have to have a low handicap to participate in most of these events. Some are flighted and designed for women golfers at all levels.
  • We're Giving Back to You- thanks to our fantastic membership growth, we are able to subsidize some events this year. Look for a Blackstone event in May with significantly discounted greens fees. Once again, we'll play our end of season event at Pinehills, with lunch for far below the cost you would pay to play 18 holes. And, those events are just the beginning! Look for details coming soon on the web.
  • New Events - this year look for some great new venues. With over 30 events scheduled, we'll be playing Ipswich Country Club in July, the International in September, and the newly opened Shining Rock in August. In fact, we have events scheduled at seven out of the top ten courses in Massachusetts as rated in the March 12th Golf Week Magazine!
  • New Leagues - your favorites will return, but we've added a Tuesday night league at Pembroke Country Club, and don't forget our growing Sunday league at Putterham.
  • Gear up for Golf Day - join us on May 16th as we hit the links at Pine Oaks.  We have a special day of activities planned for us by our marquee sponsor, Joe and Leigh's. Pine Oaks was named by the Boston Globe as one of the top five public 9-hole courses, and Joe and Leigh's has been tagged as a top 100 golf shop in the nation. That combination makes for an exciting event where you can get your game, technique and equipment all geared up for a great season.
As you all know, EWGA membership offers a tremendous value. With discounted greens fees, access to courses not available to the public, education opportunities, handicap service, networking, national benefits, competitive events and more, EWGA is the place to be for women's golf in the greater Boston area.

So now, I'd like to ask for your help with our Member-Get-A-Member campaign. You can win some great prizes, including a possible free membership for recruiting members into our Chapter. Strong membership numbers are the engine that drives our ability to offer great events all season long. Our official goal from National this year is 489, but I've love to see us at 500 women strong! If each one of us recruits just one member into the chapter, we will have easily surpassed our goal and more.  Isn't there someone with whom you'd like to share the great benefits of EWGA Boston?

I'm in Pinehurst this week with nine other Boston Chapter members to attend EWGA's annual Golfpalooza. At the event, Immediate Past President Jackie Corcoran will accept our Membership Growth Award. We'll have a whole table of folks for some loud Boston cheering. Exciting stuff! Look for photos and news at Kickoff.

That's it for now. I look forward to seeing you at Kickoff, and of course, on the golf course very soon. Think sun!

Your 2010 Chapter President,

Nancy

Handy Handicap Info

The Massachusetts handicapping season opened April 1st and there are changes to the EWGA handicap system.

EWGA has introduced a revised handicap system coincident with other changes to the National website and associated member database. This new system is called GN21, and it replaces Golf Life Management System (GLMS). All future references to the free handicap service you receive from EWGA will refer to GN21. The system has just been implemented, so there will be some growing pains and we ask for your patience. If you have any questions, please send an email to handicap@ewgaboston.org.

There will be more information in the next newsletter, but here are a couple of pointers:
  1. If you have completed your initial set-up on the EWGA MEMBER site with your email address and password, and click the box that says "Remember Me", you will never have to enter this information again. Logging into your handicap account will be only 2 clicks away.... MEMBER LOGIN and then HANDICAP on the left side.

  2. To change your personal home course, click on the ACCOUNT tab on the top of your GN21 home page, and then scroll down to "Edit courses and Default Tee".  Click on "search course directory" then, after finding the course you want, Submit it. This will change your home course to facilitate your score posting. (Note that the Chapter "Home Course" is set for the Chapter, and will not be affected by the change you made to your default home course.)

  3. The Attest Button will be put up on the Post Score Page in a couple of days.

  4. Most of the course information has been updated. However, if you find a course that does not have the correct slope and rating, please use "click here" to report missing or incorrect information to GolfNet. This item is located directly beneath where you select your course and will display a screen where you can enter the information to be corrected.

Correction
In last month's newsletter, the date for the Championship warm-up date was mis-stated. The correct date is May 23rd. Always refer to the Events calendar on our website for the most current information about any of our events.
