WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS?

This November, the Blair Academy Singers, Jazz Band and Orchestra performed in the annual Fall Concert right before Thanksgiving Break. The concert was attended by all Blair students and was open to the public.

The Blair Academy Singers performed a variety of pieces including "That Lonesome Road" by James Taylor and a Portuguese piece, called "Muié Rendêra" by C.A Pinto Fonseca. The Jazz Band performed two pieces by John Coltrane and by Duke Ellington. The Blair Academy Orchestra continued with the pieces by well-known composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,  Johann Sabastian Bach, Pavel Tschesnokoff and Russian composer, Reinhold Gliere.

Mrs. Pagotto, Chair of the Instrumental Music Program at Blair Academy, stated, "This fall the Blair Orchestra focused on musicality, phrasing and reading beyond the page through their study of the two Russian pieces,  Salvation and Russian Sailor's Dance.  Though the pieces differ quite a bit in style and structure, they both challenge the player to look deeper into the music to find meaning and to bring the performance to life.  Both Russian pieces were played beautifully in the Fall Concert, and the orchestra will give an encore performance of Russian Sailor's Dance at the Steel Stacks Concert on Tuesday, December 6th."

The Blair Academy Singers and Orchestra will perform a Holiday Concert at 7:00 pm on December 6th (tonight) at the Steel Stacks Complex in Bethlehem, PA. This event is open to the public.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE COMMUNITY

Each year the Art Department takes advantage of Blair's close proximity to the first-class museums of New York City and Philadelphia, arranging trips throughout the year. This fall, Blair art students have enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Christo's studio in New York City as well as the Museum of Art's Annual Crafts Show in Philadelphia.

Students from Drawing, Painting, AP Portfolio and AP Art History had the opportunity to see paintings by Baroque and Impressionist painters such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Vermeer as well as Greek and Roman sculptures and various other genres of art at the Met. The students enjoyed their time and made many interesting observations. AP Art History student, Hannah '12  wrote, "The Greek Kouros statue in class seemed awkward and disproportionate. After seeing him in person... He seemed strong, stable, wise, and serene. Also, he seemed to emanate youth, which would make his name appropriate in a way that I was unable to appreciate before I saw him in person."

In early November, twenty Blair students and faculty traveled to Manhattan to visit the artist, Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and his studio. The Bulgarian born artist talked with the students for an hour, highlighting two of his in-progress projects, Over the River (which was recently passed to be installed in southern Colorado in the summer of 2014) and The Mastaba. After the talk, Christo spent time answering questions that the students had about his work, his life and his projects.

Last weekend, Ms. Yuen, the Video Production teacher at Blair, took a trip to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for interested students. Blair's ideal location and fantastic Fine Arts program creates a great atmosphere for students interested in the arts. To learn more about Fine Arts at Blair and the courses offered, click here.

MEASURES OF EXCELLENCE

This past month, Haeyoon '14 was awarded as a semi-finalist in the Siemens Competition of Math, Science and Technology, which "reveals the brightest high school minds in contention for the nation's most coveted teen science prize." According to the Siemens Foundation, an all-time record of 2,436 students registered to enter the 2011-2012 Siemens Competition for an unprecedented 1,541 projects submitted. The Competition, administered by The College Board and funded by the Siemens Foundation, gives students an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects that they complete in high school. Student research is judged on creativity, field knowledge, comprehensiveness, interpretation, a literature review, scientific importance, clarity of expression, and presentation.

This past summer, Haeyoon was in contact with a Columbia professor with an idea to research cancer cells and to examine the differences among various types of cells. She focused on two similar cancer cells to see if she could detect differences in the protein sequences and if ultimately she could figure out which part of the cells caused cancer. After sending them to Yale University to be mutated, Haeyoon wrote a research paper expounding on the cell investigation and has received national recognition for her new and noteworthy research of cancer cells. Congratulations, Haeyoon!

ATHLETES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

On a perfect autumn afternoon in Hightstown, the Bucs secured another year of bragging rights by taking home the Kelley-Potter Cup for the second year in a row. Busloads of fans traveled to the Peddie School to support the Bucs on Saturday following a spirited pep rally and the traditional bonfire on Friday night. Peddie Day honors the oldest prep school football rivalry in the state and has occurred annually since 1903.

Leading up to Peddie Day, Blair students dressed for Pajama Day, Twin Day, Clash Day, Blair Wear Day throughout the week. The students were excited and waited with anticipation for Peddie Day to arrive. At Friday's school meeting before Peddie Day, Buccaneer pride was ignited with this video made by Video Production teacher Nina Yuen and her students.

Throughout the day, Blair secured wins in Girls' JV Tennis, Boys' Varsity Soccer, Girls' JV Soccer, Girls' Cross Country, Varsity Football and JV Field Hockey. Highlights of the day included a hat trick by Esther '14 in the JV Field Hockey game and an exciting goal by Yonny '12 in double overtime in the Boys' Varsity Soccer game. Great fun was had by all and Blair looks forward to participating in next year's friendly competition with a home field advantage!
