WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS?
Team Breed Held the Lead
Blair's Headmasters' Societies Competition Week, now in its eighth year, gives students and faculty a chance to have fun on an intramural level. Headmaster Chan Hardwick awarded the Trophy to Team Breed at the end of the week.
Sports and other activities, such as a bake-off, board games, and a quiz bowl are played by four teams named
after four former Blair Headmasters (Breed, Kelley, Howard, Sharpe). Every student and faculty member belongs to a team and remains a part of that team throughout their years at Blair.
This year, the Class of 2014 inaugurated a Macbeth recitation competition, with Kelley taking top prize in that particular contest. Overall it was a spirited and exciting week that encouraged students to get involved, be team leaders, and get to know different peers and faculty members. |
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE COMMUNITY
Math Madness Takes Hold!
Mathematics department chairman Latta Browse is pleased to report on a number of achievements by Blair students during various math contests this winter. Most recently, Phil '11 competed in the 31st annual Lehigh University High School Math Contest on March 5, just as most students were leaving for spring vacation. He finished first in his age group, fifth overall out of 360 competitors.
On February 15, 33 students took part in the fifth round of the New Jersey Math League competition. Blair earned 28 out of a possible 30 points. Mr. Browse noted, "After four rounds, Blair was in fifth place in New Jersey; the latest score should help us stay in the top tier." |

MEASURES OF EXCELLENCE
Fine arts department chair Kate Sykes reports on the success of a Blair student whose work was selected for the Morris Museum's "Fresh Perspectives" exhibit. Natalie '14 worked diligently to finish her "Garden of June" abstract sculpture for jurying. She created a variety of non-specific organic forms and textures, glazing them in a mixture of greens, browns, gold, red and white.

The art exhibit in Morristown, N.J., opens May 12 and runs through June 12. A reception will be held on May 17 from 6-8 p.m. Natalie's work was selected from over 430 pieces submitted with 50 chosen for this museum exhibit. Kate notes, "The juried show, created to showcase the diverse work of high school students from central and northern New Jersey, exemplifies the fact that a dutiful work ethic and strong personal voice are the true marks of a successful artist."

ATHLETES IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Both Blair's girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams won Prep A State titles on February 23. Final scores: Boys - Blair vs. Lawrenceville 58-52; Girls - Blair vs. Peddie 58-32.

The girls' victory is their first Prep A State Championship. According to the coaches, after winning the MAPL championship two weekends prior to the state tournament, the Blair girls determined that a state title was theirs to win. The Peddie girls won the Prep A Title for the past 14 years; accordingly, they came into the game with confidence. Blair got off to a slow start defensively but shot the ball well to earn a nine-point half-time lead. Tenacious third-quarter defense from the Lady Bucs set the tone that Coach Altman had hoped for. A series of steals and fast break points quickly extended the Blair lead, and a number of Blair reserves also added quality minutes in the final quarter of play.

With the winter season behind us, Blair looks forward to the spring sports seasons. Many Blair teams elect to take a spring break training trip the last week of break before school starts up again. This year, the lacrosse, crew, baseball, golf, softball and tennis teams all head south to sharpen their skills for the upcoming spring sports seasons. Blair athletics head into the warmer months with a total of four prep state championships. With one of the most succesful years in Blair history, the spring teams are eager to add more trophies to this year's total. Gooo Bucs! |
