What's Happening on Campus

After a relaxing and fun-filled summer vacation, students not only look forward to their return to campus and their reunion with friends and teachers, but they also eagerly await the opening year traditions such as pizza night in the plaza, the all-school picnic in the Bowl, dorm activity nights, and prefect training games. The first days at Blair are filled with fun events designed to set a positive tone for the academic year ahead.  Last Sunday was one of the hottest and muggiest days of the year, with temperatures reaching the eighties, but Blair students were not deterred by the heat!  Instead, they spent most of Sunday afternoon outdoors participating in the opening weekend's Super Sunday extravaganza with a kick-off barbeque on the Health Center lawn.  Students played volleyball against the faculty, jumped on the moon bounce, tried on vintage Peddie Day t-shirts, and participated in the Grease Slide, one of the most favored Blair traditions. Dean of Academics, Sam Bacon, manages the infamous Grease Slide, awarding prizes not only to the most favored slider, but to the male and female students who run furthest up the slippery slope, set up on the front hill for all to see. After an exhilarating and hot day, students returned to their dorms on Sunday evening for study hall in anticipation of the first full week of classes.

From Africa to Spain, China to Eastern Europe, Blair faculty and students were found traveling across the globe last summer! Part of the Blair experience is exploring and learning outside of the classroom and beyond campus. This summer was no exception with an impressive offering of international travel offered by Blair faculty. Latin teacher Eric Lunger traveled with a group of seven Blair students to Tunisia in North Africa to tour significant Roman archaeological sites including visits to ancient Carthage, Dougga, Bulla Regia, Mactaris, Sufetula and Haidra. Chinese teachers Dave and Lian Facciani accompanied a group of students to China in late June, making their way from Beijing to Honk Kong with stops in Tian Jin, Xian, and Mrs. Facciani's hometown, Guang Zhou.

As part of the Summer School in Spain program, Don Morley, Head of the Language Department, traveled with students to Segovia for a one month program offered for academic credit at Blair. Students studied Spanish language and history for three hours a day with the Instituto San Pedro while living with a Spanish host family. Afternoons were spent visiting cathedrals, museums, and historical districts around Segovia and Spain's capital, Madrid, and volunteering at Segovia's city government youth center. At the end of the program the group traveled south to Andalucia visiting Seville, Granada, and Cordoba, cities filled with Moorish architecture and rich in Spanish culture. They were even able to join the week long celebration of the Patron Saint of Segovia at the end of June! That, coupled with Spain's wonderful defeat of Germany in the 2008 European Cup, made for an exciting introduction to the city. Mr. Morely's annual Summer School program will return to Cuenca, Ecuador in the summer of 2009. Click here to read a more detailed report and view photos from Blair's Summer School in Spain.

Last June, the Blair Academy Singers and String Ensemble embarked on a 12-day Eastern Europe tour. The musicians and Singers performed in Prague, Vienna, and Budapest at some of Europe's best concert venues including St. Nicholas Cathedral in Prague's Old Town Square, St. Stephan's Cathedral in Vienna, Franz Joseph Haydn's Concert Hall in Esterhazy, and the recital hall in Pomaz's School of Music. Each hall represents a respect for and dedication to music and clearly distinguishes music as an integral and important part of European culture. Both groups performed a variety of music, most of which they performed on the Blair campus throughout the 2007-2008 school year. Coupled with the rigorous concert schedule were tours of historic castles, monuments, and museums. Students enjoyed seeing the sites of such amazing cities as well as performing at such highly esteemed venues, and many look forward to another concert tour in the near future.

The Singers and the String Ensemble as well as the fine arts department and theatre groups are now back in full swing for the 2008-2009 school year and have begun a new season of concerts, exhibits, and productions. The Blair website now includes the latest listings of what's on tap for the 2008-09 school year. Click here for a full listing of this year's performing arts events. The Blair Academy Players will kick off their season on October 30 with Inherit the Wind, a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee based on the events of the famous Scopes trial.

It was an impressive start for the Blair Buccaneers in September, as four teams won their season openers.  The girls' varsity cross country squad competed in the 31st Newark Academy Invitational and "ran" away with the title for the first time in school history.  This race consisted of at least 60 competitors, and three Blair runners (Quinn '11, Heather '10, and Ruth '09) finished in the top ten. With their largest team ever, the girls' cross country team is poised for another great season under the guidance of Coaches Latta Browse (browsl@blair.edu) and Heather Eckert (eckerh@blair.edu).

On the soccer pitch Blair captured more hardware as the girls' and boys' varsity soccer teams earned the Friendship Cup by defeating our Warren county neighbor, Phillipsburg High School.  In the girls' game, the Bucs were led by Arielle '10, who scored 4 goals. Cat '12 performed outstandingly in the net by allowing only one goal during the course of the game. On the boy's side Seniors Yale and Nic led the team with one goal each, and Blair's stingy defense shutout the Stateliner offense.

The girls' varsity tennis team defeated our rival, the Peddie School, in its first Mid-Atlantic Prep League competition of the year.  In the single matches, Kelsey '11, Francesca '10, and Aly '09 beat their opponents 2-0, while the doubles team of Jordan '11 and Lindsey '09 came from behind to win their match 2-1.

With the addition of our new all-weather turf, Hampshire Field, and the scheduled completion of our Student Activities and Athletic Center, the school community is eager to begin the 2008-2009 athletic season on a positive note. With ample games scheduled "Under-the-Lights" this will certainly prove to be an exciting and spirited year!

A Closer Look at the Community

Last weekend the senior prefects and the
freshmen traveled to the Princeton-Blairstown Center for Blair's annual freshmen retreat. The students and faculty broke into small groups which focused on unity, trust, and leadership. Over the course of the weekend, the kids engaged in various games and activities to "break-the-ice" and to formulate their own unique identity as the class of 2012. Despite soggy conditions, the students returned to campus energized and enthusiastic to begin their time at Blair.

Led by veteran faculty member Carolyn Conforti-Browse, the senior prefects who managed the Freshmen Retreat were handpicked by the faculty to serve as leaders in the Blair community. Each dormitory utilizes two to eight prefects to mentor underclassmen as they embark upon their years at Blair. The prefects offer counsel and informal support in order to guide their peers along a path to success. Likewise, they serve as a vital link between housemasters and the students living in our dormitories. As juniors, these leaders begin a lengthy application and interview process which culminates in a week-long leadership training exercise at the beginning of their senior year.

We hope this month's edition of "Around the Arch" provided you with an informative glimpse into the Blair community.
