Happy New Year from Blair!

Welcome to the fourth edition of "Around the Arch," a monthly publication aimed solely at giving you - the prospective student - a peek into the daily life of the Blair community. The students and faculty returned from the holiday vacation with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the start of the second semester. January always proves to be an exciting, enjoyable, and busy month highlighted with new classes, the height of winter sports, preparation for the musical, and, of course, the annual Sadie Hawkins dance (girls ask the boys!). In this newsletter you will hear about the events at Blair, and, as always, we invite you to explore our website to learn more about community life. Enjoy and please let us know if you have any questions.

What's Happening on Campus?

This past weekend international students and faculty had the opportunity to share food, music, and cultural traditions with the Blair community during the annual International Weekend.  Hosted by the Language Department and BIAC (Blair International Awareness Club), students from each language class helped their teachers prepare activities and food for the International Bazaar on Saturday night.  Walking around the bazaar, one was greeted by Roman soldiers, served French crepes at the sit-down café, sampled traditional Korean, Thai, and Mexican food, and learned techniques of the Chinese fan dancing while enjoying Salsa music and Reggaeton in the background, all in the span of fifteen minutes!  The bazaar concluded with a dynamic fashion show displaying traditional garments and clothing from around the world.  The highlight of the night was the international karaoke in the Campus Center, which drew students into the beloved "Can" to sing their favorite English songs as well as Chinese, Korean, and French tunes!  The weekend was a huge success, bringing the community together in an effort to teach and experience international lifestyles and traditions.

Blair on Stage

The Blair Academy Players present Guys and Dolls on February 14, 15, and 16.  This beloved musical features several seniors, for whom this performance will mark the last musical of their Blair careers, and many underclassmen, who will perform with Blair for the first time this winter.  This weekend, the cast and crew enjoyed a brief respite from daily rehearsals when they slept over in the DuBois Theatre of Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts, where the musical will be performed in one month.

As a proud participant in the Freddy Awards competition, a program honoring high school musicals, Blair won Best Production by a Smaller School and Best Featured Ensemble Member for its production of Urinetown last year.  This year, the Blair Academy Players look forward to garning recognition once again.  Directed by the head of the performing arts department, Mr. Craig Evans, Guys and Dolls is bound to be a stellar performance.  The show is general admission with the house opening at 7 p.m. for performances at 7:30 p.m.  Admission is $8 for adults and $5 dollars for students.  Come see the musical and enjoy this magical performance!

Athlete in the Spotlight

In November, Blair post-graduate Jarrett (right) signed a letter of intent to attend Stanford University in the fall of 2009. A native of Townsend, DE, Jarrett explains that he was drawn to Blair by its ability to combine strong academic programs with a rich athletic tradition. According to Jarrett, "I wanted the best preparation for Stanford in a variety of areas - academics and athletics - as well as a chance to develop greater independence." Next year, Jarrett intends to play basketball for the Cardinals, and he has led the Blair basketball team to an early 11-3 record against competition throughout the Northeast, including an undefeated stretch within the M.A.P.L. When Jarrett reflected on his first semester, he explained, "The best part of Blair has been the chance to meet new people from all walks of life. This environment is entirely different from my hometown, but the chance to attend Blair has been so rewarding."

Schmalenberg BookHistory teacher Mr. Marty Schmalenberg released his book entitled North American Bonsai, which provides a record of the first exhibit of North American Bonsai staged by the American Bonsai Society in Saratoga Springs, N.Y during the spring of 2006. The bonsai featured by Mr. Schmalenberg's book were styled by North American artists using North American materials. Mr. Schmalenberg has traveled and studied extensively in Asia, Europe and Africa to further his knowledge of bonsai and viewing stone art. He also lived and studied in Japan, and he currently teaches Asian Studies courses which focus on the history and culture of Japan and China.

Model UN LogoNext weekend, student delegates from Blair will travel to Columbia University in New York City as part of the Ivy League Model UN. Blair representatives join other students from across the country to act as delegates from various nations and create resolutions designed to solve a number of international issues. Over the past month the Blair participants have researched the history and policies of their countries in an effort to tackle committee topics. They also prepared position papers which they will use as the basis for resolutions which will be subject to committee voting procedures. This year, our students sit on the Human Rights Committee, the Joint Crisis Committee, and the African Union. They also plan to discuss the ongoing catastrophe in Rwanda, human rights in China, and peace in the Middle East.

As of mid-January, colleges from around the country mailed early decisions on a number of Blair seniors. Members of the senior class gained entrance into many schools including the following: Boston College, Brown, Cornell, George Washington, Hobart, Middlebury, Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Saint Andrew's (UK), Syracuse, the United States Naval Academy, and West Point. As a testament to the strength of the senior class, two Blair seniors were honored by reaching the final rounds of both the Morehead Scholarship (University of North Carolina) and the Jefferson Scholarship (University of Virginia).  Those students who did not apply early decision or early action remain patient and optimistic as decision letters trickle in during the next couple of months. Judging by the success of Blair students thus far in the college process, the news that awaits our remaining seniors is promising.

We hope this month's edition of "Around the Arch" provided you with an informative glimpse into the Blair community. With the admission deadline of February 1st approaching rapidly, we encourage you to visit the campus in order to experience Blair firsthand. If you would like to schedule an interview please call Ms. Constantino at (908) 362-2024 ext. 5611. Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Haase, Mrs. Eckert, Mr. Posner, Mr. Pearce, Ms. Machabanski, Mr. Clavel, Mrs. Findlay, and Ms. Constantino
