 Dawn
It's hard to believe that it was 20 years ago when I lost my job due to down-sizing.  That's when I decided to started SBA Services so I wouldn't have to look for a "real" job.  Today, I have learned so much, met so many wonderful people and have grown in ways I never would have expected.  Of course, my business today doesn't look anything like my original business plan, but that's OK, I'm still having fun.

Payroll Check List

I have had many people ask for a "Cheat Sheet" for payroll - What needs to be done when.
I have attempted to create such a help.  Because no two businesses are the same, you will need to know whether you're a Monthly, Semi-Weekly or Next Day filer.

If you would like a "Free" copy of this Payroll Check List, just send an email to sbaservices@comcast.net with Payroll Check List in the Subject and we'll send it to you.
Xpanded Reports

Do you sometimes get frustrated that you can't create the exact reports that you want in QuickBooks?

I have found this wonderful 3rd party program Xpanded Reports that links seamlessly with your data and gives you that extra help in creating reports.  It will even let you convert the custom fields from a text field to a date or numeric field and remember that.  It allows you to add calculation fields.  You can download a trial version to play with for 30-days.  Take a look.

Going Paperless

More and more companies are wanting to go paperless.  I've found a great add-on that works great!  (Yes, I'm using it).  It's call SmartVault.

With this tool you'll be able to scan vendor bills, reports, anything you want and attach it to the document in QuickBooks!  Just image, never having to go to the filing cabinet again to see a vendor bill.

Take a look - you'll love it!

Payroll Stimulus Package
Thanks to the new Federal Payroll stimulus package most people should see an increase to their take home pay.

How do you get it?

If you're using any of Intuit's Payroll Subscriptions, make sure and do a Payroll Update.  You should be on Release 20908.  This will automatically adjust the tax calculations and most employee's should see a decrease in the amount of Federal and State Withholding.  (Go to Employee's on the top menu and select Get Payroll Updates).

Cobra benefits
With more people facing layouts, the employee has the option of keeping their health benefits through Cobra for 18 months.  Typically, the employee that choose this option would reimburse the company for the employee & company premium.

Here's the information from Intuit on how it will be handled.

COBRA premium subsidy:

    * Intuit will be releasing the new Form 941 to support the COBRA premium subsidy in late March.
    * Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, certain individuals who are eligible for COBRA continuation health coverage, or similar coverage under State law, may receive a subsidy for 65 percent of the premium. These individuals are required to pay only 35 percent of the premium. The employer may recover the subsidy provided to assistance-eligible individuals by taking the subsidy amount as a credit on its quarterly employment tax return. The employer may provide the subsidy - and take the credit on its employment tax return - only after it has received the 35 percent premium payment from the individual.
    * The IRS website has a question & answer section for employers, and the United States Department of Labor website has a fact sheet about the COBRA premium reduction.
IRS Website

    * Employers should use the updated Form 941, Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return, to report their COBRA premium assistance payments.  Intuit will be releasing the new Form 941 in late March.
    * Intuit has been actively working with government agencies to understand how this law will impact small businesses and what effects it will have on payroll-related activities.  We will continue to keep you informed - check this page often to get up-to-date information about this sweeping legislation.
