    Microsoft Small Business Accounting

Microsoft has introduced it's new Small Business Accounting program. The biggest selling feature is that it interfaces with Microsoft Office.

I have installed the program and am in the process of learning it. At this point, I would say that QuickBooks has more of the features a small business would want out of the box. Microsoft is hoping that 3rd party programs will become a integral part of the new program. I am attending a seminar to Nov. to learn more about this program.

Come join us for a FREE demonstration of this new program. I'll be demonstrating both Microsoft Small Business Accounting and the new QuickBooks 2006. DEC. 1 from 1:00-4:00PM, at our training room, located at 7100 SW Hampton, Tigard OR. Seating is limited, so please call ahead to reserve your spot. Come prepared to ask questions.

    Year End Class

The end of the year is approaching. Regardless of what accounting program you use, there are certain tasks you need to preform. Why wait until the accountant looks things over next year. Learn what to look at now, while you can still make changes.

Come to this informative session on what to do at year end. Whether you use QuickBooks or Peachtree, all participants will receive year end guides.

When: Thurs. DEC 8th, 1:00-4:30PM Cost: $69.00 seating is limited, register now to save your space. Location: 7100 SW Hampton. Tigard OR

    Q & A

I would like to add a new section to the newsletter called Q&A. In order for it to work, I need QUESTIONS from you. In the next issue, I will respond with an answer.

Email me at sbaservices@comcast.net and I'll include your question & answer in the next newsletter. I will also email you directly with the answer so you won't have to wait.

    Creating an Employee Draw Report

Do your employee's periodically get payroll advances (draws)? Do you have trouble keeping track of how much you need to deduct from whose paycheck? Use this easy to create report to keep track of who has received an advance and who you're deducted already.

    Give the employee a check

    1. use the 'Write Checks'
    2. Make sure and use the Employee's Name (not a vendor)
    3. Post to an Asset account called 'Employee Draws'

    Create a Payroll Deduction Item,

    1. Make sure you select a Deduction type
    2. Point the payroll item to the asset account ' Employee Draws'
    3. This is deducted from the NET check

    Now, go to Reports

    1. Start with a Custom Transaction Detail Report
    2. Filter it for your 'Employee Draw' asset account
    3. Select the columns you want to see - Date, Name, Num & Amount
    4. Under Display, Total the report by Employee

This report will show you when you gave each employee the draw and when you deducted it from their paycheck. I go one step future and reconcile the cleared transactions once a month and add a filter to only include uncleared transactions.

    W-2's & 1099's

I know, it's not the end of the year yet, but it's not to soon to start thinking about it.

If you are using QuickBooks Payroll, you will be able to print your W-2's for 2005 on plain paper. These forms are accepted by the IRS. No fuss, no alignment problems, just print.

The 1099's (as of 8/31/05) will still need to have a form to print on. I will be ordering them by the end of September. As in years past, if you need just a few 1099's or W-2 form give us a call. I order them in bulk and will send you the number of forms you need for $0.60/form.
