Using eCampus Early Warning System (EWS)
The Early Warning System is a rule-driven communication tool that sends email messages to students when the criteria for the rule is triggered. Warnings can be generated based on graded performance, late or missing course work, or attendance within the online course. EWS identifies students that meet the specific rules set up by the instructor. There are three generic messages to students:
-
Last Access Rule: "This message is to remind you to log in. Regular attendance is required."
-
Grade Rule:"This message has been sent based on your score on a Grade Center item." It helps to identify students who fall below an assigned grade.
-
Due Date Rule:"This message has been sent to remind you that a Grade Center item is due."
EWS helps facilitate monitoring and notification but is initiated by the instructor at their discretion.

New Virtual Transfer Videos Help Students Make Informed Choices
Earlier this year an innovative new video series was produced to help students in making the difficult choices of transferring colleges. The LeCroy Center, along with DCCCD Transfer Services, and national colleges and universities developed the Virtual Transfer College Fair online to allow students to get information from participating institutions, at their convenience. University representatives give a brief, informative talk about their university and other information students who are thinking about transferring to a four year institution need to know. Links to other important websites are also available.
At least four of the Virtual Fair featured institutions are working with students from the Dallas TeleCollege to complete degrees in a 3 + 1 online transfer programs. This option allows students to take up to 3-years worth of courses with the DCCCD and transfer those hours towards a 4-year degree with one of the participating colleges. Amberton University, Excelsior University, Northcentral University and Thomas Edison University allow students to complete that last year as an online student . In addition their are 10 colleges and universities that allow distance learning DCCCD students to transfer with upwards of 90 community college credits.

Online Education is the New Normal
With federal regulators and Congress reviewing for-profit education providers, it would be easy to assume online education is part of the target. NO... it's simply not true. The NUTN 2010 Summit keynotes, plenary panels and sessions will address why online education is part of the NEW NORMAL in designing policy, in achieving higher graduation rates, and scaling operations. Numbers are playing an increasing role but so is online learning.
Distance learning professionals should attend the NUTN Summit to learn how the world of online students is contributing to "The New Normal" in higher education. Hear from the president of the American Association of Community Colleges, Fort Hays State University, and Touro University on how technology has forever changed higher education.
The LeCroy Center is the host institution of NUTN therefore, DCCCD staff register at the NUTN member rate.
You can't afford to miss the NUTN 2010 Summit-REGISTER Today!

"Hot Topic" Webinars Available for Checkout
Webinars are a kind of interactive online session or workshop that can include audio, video, slides, screen sharing, white boards, and a wide range of other types of content to share information across multiple locations. The LeCroy Center purchases hundreds of web-based conferences and programs yearly for the DCCCD-- everything from, "Crisis Communications" to "Using Effective Web 2.0 Tools For Retention Rates". In today's economy of budget-tightening web-conferences can equate to more effective training, reduced travel expenses, lower costs than would be incurred by participation or attendance at trade shows, and greater overall employee productivity. With the help of the District Service Center and Richland College Media Technology, webinar programs are now cataloged on DVDs and ready for check out through the district's Library System.

LeCroy Center Receives FIPSE Grant to Develop Freeware for Colleges Around the State
The LeCroy Center recently received funding from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) to explore the concept of open courseware or freeware. The overall goal of the "Texas Freeware Project" is to design and implement a process for providing free courseware to participating institutions, so that students will benefit by having access to pedagogically sound, video and interactive content without having to pay for online cartridges, CDs, or DVDs. With online enrollments increasing in community colleges and universities across the state, legislators are calling for more collaboration and partnerships between educational institutions. Open educational resources (OER) and freeware projects such as this one, helps to foster collaboration by providing free online teaching and learning materials for participating institutions.
Highlights of the Texas Freeware Project
- Complete access to our award winning course content, this includes video, interactives for student self-assessment and study materials.
- An instructional designer that will help adapt the content to LMS/CMS with course design principles that follow Quality Matters standards.
- Access to a learning community devoted to implementing and sharing Best Practices in the online environment using the open courseware movement.
