be one of the most difficult decisions anyone ever has to make. The fact that the family member needs to move to a nursing home means that he or she is in a vulnerable state and will be dependent on the care provided in the facility.

Substituted Judgment: When Guardianship Alone is Not Enough to Allow for Treatment

The Massachusetts Guardianship Association invites you to join four panelists who will discuss which treatments are considered extraordinary and require a substituted judgment determination, when an adult may have the capacity to consent to or refuse treatment, how a guardian seeks court authority, and the role of a guardian ad litem. 
The program will take place on Wednesday, October 17th at Whitney Place Assisted Living Residences, located at 3 Vision Drive, Natick.  Registration and breakfast will start at 7:30 a.m.  The panel discussion and Q&A will be from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.

10th Annual "Heads Held High" Walk with BABIS

Join the Boston Acquired Brain Injury Support
Group on Saturday, October 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Jamaica Pond for a 1.5 mile walk to help raise brain injury awareness.

Brain injury is more prevalent in the U.S. than breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries.  Proceeds from this year's walk will help support various local agencies that promote brain injury awareness.

Alzheimer's Frontier: New Directions in Prevention, Diagnosis & Treatment 

Dr. Gad A. Marshall will draw from his research at Brigham &  
Women's Center for Alzheimer's Research Treatment and Harvard Medical School to offer caregivers an overview of Alzheimer's disease and new diagnostic tools and trends in treatment and prevention at a program at the Goddard House in Brookline located at 165 Chestnut Street, Brookline, that will take place on Thursday, October 11th, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
 
A delicious dinner of "superfoods" that support physical and cognitive health will be served!

As the 2012 summer ozone season comes to an end, the EPA today confirmed that New Englanders experienced a modest increase in the number of poor air quality days this year, compared to 2011.

 

Based on preliminary data collected between April and September, there were 29 days when ozone monitors in New England recorded air quality concentrations above the air quality health standard. By contrast, in 2011 there were a total of 16 unhealthy ozone days. However, over the longer term air quality in New England continues to improve.
