Massachusetts Seniors Face Largest Gap Between Income, and Expenses, Study Finds
Wider Opportunities for Women and the University of Massachusetts Gerontology Institute have released a report on the financial wellbeing of seniors nationwide. It finds that seniors in Massachusetts between their income and living expenses as compared to all other states, face the largest gap on average. The study determines a basic cost of living for seniors in each state, which they call the Elder Economic Security Index, and compares it to their average income. In Massachusetts, the Elder Index is $27,048 per year and the average income is $16,800, meaning that on average seniors only have 62% of the income necessary to meet their basic needs.
