MESSAGE FROM OUR ROSH YESHIVA |
Don't Worry - Be Happy!
In the midst of the Tochachah, containing the long and bitter list of punishments which the Torah in this week's parashah says will be visited upon the Jewish people should they not properly observe all of the mitzvos, we are told that one of the underlying reasons behind all of these terrible consequences is the failure to serve Hashem with simchah, gladness and a joyful heart (Devarim 28:46). Apparently, it is necessary not only to serve Him, to perform the mitzvos, and to obey His laws, but to do so in a spirit of happiness and joy. A person who is sad, depressed, angry and bitter will not be able to serve Hashem the same way or with the same effectiveness.
This idea that a person will be more successful at whatever he does when he goes about his business in a cheerful, upbeat, positive mood has been confirmed by modern psychologists and is a cornerstone thought of many successful corporations who strive to create a comfortable working environment for their employees in order to increase their productivity.
The same is true of one pursuing success in academics and certainly in mastery of Torah. As explained by Rav Avraham Bornstein, the late Sochatchover Rebbe, in the famous introduction to his Sefer Eglei Tal on the laws of Shabbos, happiness and joy in Torah learning is an integral part of the mitzvah of Talmud Torah. If a person enjoys what he is doing, he will do it better.
One of the missions of our school is to not only teach our talmidim, but to engender within them that special feeling of simchah - about Torah and mitzvos, about scholastic accomplishments, and about life. We want the classrooms and halls of our yeshiva to be filled with happy, positive young men who are excited and enthusiastic about what they are doing right now, even as they look ahead to bright futures. This is by no means to suggest, of course, that everything will always turn out exactly the way every given student wants it to be - life doesn't work that way. But with the structure we do have in place here, with so many opportunities (curricular and extra-curricular), with such a terrific learning environment, and with so many caring staff members supporting each and every talmid, we maintain that we are uniquely situated to offer the kind of educational program and the kind of yeshiva atmosphere most conducive to producing the next generation of Bnai Torah who will serve Hashem with true happiness.
We welcome everyone back from what we hope was a wonderful summer, and are eagerly anticipating a happy new (school) year.

School Year Gets Off to Great Start
by: Akiva Schiff ('13)

This week we returned to our cozy home on Amsterdam Avenue to begin another exciting year at MTA. On Tuesday, MTA hosted the annual freshman orientation, welcoming in the new class of ninth graders. The day began with davening in the historic Joseph Alexander Library, followed by an inspirational Dvar Torah from Rabbi Taubes, as well as other opening remarks by other faculty members. Following Shiur, which included a brief greeting from YU Rosh Yeshiva Rav Mordechai Willig, the freshmen were introduced to their senior "Big-Brothers," and enjoyed a pizza lunch together. This was the first of many events aimed at fostering close inter-grade relationships throughout the student body. After attending slightly abbreviated classes in the afternoon, our newly orientated freshmen - the MTA Class if 2016 - returned home, excited to begin their four-year journey through high school. Click here for more pictures of Freshmen Orientation. On Wednesday, the rest of the students returned for the first day of classes. Each grade held a separate orientation meeting in the morning, in which guiding words were shared by administrators and respective Grade Deans. In addition to the beginning of the academic year, this week marked the start of multiple exciting extra-curricular activities that began in full-force. Varsity Hockey and Basketball tryouts already took place, and tryouts for Wrestling, JV Basketball, and JV Hockey will take place next week. Additionally, auditions were held for the chorus and the band. Many other clubs and student activities began this week as well, while the remainder will host their opening events in the near future. There are still spots open in many clubs, and we strongly encourage all students (especially freshmen) to seize the opportunity to participate in the many great things that MTA has to offer. Finally, as a welcome back present to the student body, our Student Council provided all students with delicious free Dunkin Donuts on Thursday morning. These donuts were accompanied by gorgeous flyers informing the school of the upcoming school-wide shabbaton on November 10th; we are all looking forward to the wonderful Shabbos filled with ruach and achdus. It was a great start to the school year, as we reconnected with friends, teachers, and rebbeim after a long summer break; we hope that this is only the beginning of what will be a fantastic year. |
MTA Implements New Digital Offerings
As the new school year gets kicked off, MTA is introducing a variety of new digital platforms. To start, continuing students and parents have already noticed the new newsletter format. We have moved to Constant Contact to provide an easier to read format that allows for easier list management. Please bear with us over the next few weeks as we continue to perfect the new format.
In addition to the newsletter, MTA is delighted to launch a new dedicated Athletics website at www.MTALions.com where fans, parents, and athletes can easily view upcoming games, recent scores, pictures, videos, and more. Additionally, those interested can sign up for news alerts (by team) to be provided with instant email and/or text notifications.
On the social media front, MTA supporters can now view the school's storied history via our Facebook Timeline. Be sure to "Like" us!
Finally, within the next few weeks will be introducing a new blog for MTA news via the Yeshiva University blog platform. Stay tuned! |
