Focus Groups Provide Feedback on Endowment Campaign

Over the last several weeks the Easttown Library Foundation has hosted three focus group sessions.  Participants were asked to review the Endowment case for support and other materials and provide edit and comment.  The question posed to people attending was, what brings you to Easttown Library and do these materials reflect those feelings? It was a very interesting process and we learned a great deal.  Final Endowment documents will be available in the next few weeks. Did You Know?

Established in 1905, Easttown Library occupied nine different locations prior to its current home.

Easttown Library's first librarian was Elsie Jardine.  Named librarian in 1906, it was Elsie Jardine's job to move the
Library to its first independent home in the Yerkes Building located at Berwyn Avenue
and Main Street in Berwyn. The Library's
collection was first cataloged after this
1910 move.

A View From Youth Services
By Jen Raker
Easttown Library storyteller, Jane Klein with parent Jen Raker.E

Easttown Library's Youth Services Department is a safe environment for our children to learn, interact with other kids their age, play, and embark on a lifetime love of reading. By actively participating in the Library's early literacy classes over the past five years, we have not only made new friends, but we have also learned a great deal. Through storytelling, singing, finger-plays, musical instruments, and dancing, the classes strengthened our children's listening skills and vocabulary; encouraged participation and cooperation; and reinforced numbers, colors and other primary skills necessary for preschool and kindergarten readiness.

In addition to the early literacy classes, we have participated in the Library's playgroups and such programs as Stories on Screen, and Everybody Read and Sing, as well as visits from such special guests as Mother Goose. These programs have provided us with a variety of activities during morning weekday hours that have kept us involved with other young children in the community and enabled networking among the parents. Our family not only comes to the library to read, but to play - with trains, puppets, and Lego - and to visit the fish. The friendly atmosphere; bright, welcoming, and comfortable reading and play areas; wonderful staff, including Jane Klein, Becky Sheridan and Karen Clickener-Ousey; and great programs make the Easttown Library a place our family looks forward to visiting often.
Art Happenings at Easttown Library

On Friday May 11, Easttown Library hosted an Art Open house.  Guests enjoyed an exhibit of photographs, paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture, by Conestoga High School students.  The Conestoga Art show will be up for the rest of the month.

The open house was also the occasion to unveil a new selection of art books that have been added to the Library's collection. Easttown Library is honored to have received donations in memory of Donald A. Vigliotti from family and friends. In consultation with his family, it was decided to use the donations to purchase art books. Among the topics covered with this collection are the works of famous artists, special art collections of various museums, and how-to books. These books are a tribute to Mr. Vigliotti's memory as well as his fondness for our Library and his passion for learning and the arts. These beautiful art books are currently on display in the Library and are available to the public for checkout.

The End of the School Year Brings

Summer Reading!

We have readers of all ages at the Easttown Library! As we prepare for summer, my favorite time of the year at the Library, I think about all of the wonderful summers we have had with the youth of the community and their families. During our Summer Reading Program we offer youth the opportunity to read, attend programs and, of course, wear one of our special Easttown summer reading shirts.

This summer, the theme is Dream Big@Easttown Library. More information and the Summer Reading flyer will be posted on the web site as soon as it is available.  We hope will see you often in the coming weeks.

Friends Corner

The Friends held their most successful book sale ever in April, raising $3,500 for the library! More than two dozen volunteers lent their time to this twice-annual event. Mark your calendars for October 26-29, when the next sale will be held.

After the sale, many of the remaining books were donated to area schools, including the Chester Upland School of the Arts and St. James Middle School in Philadelphia. Books were also given to the teachers at Devon and Beaumont Elementary Schools as part of Teacher Appreciation Week.
