Reflections from the Information Desk
Head of ReferenceMy name is Audrey Young and I am the Head of Reference at the Easttown Library. You will often see me sitting at the Information Desk. Though you may see me typing on my computer, updating our website or making a flyer for an upcoming program, I hope you feel welcome to ask me for help.

Even in the age of text messaging and eBooks, people still need the Library. On a daily basis, I help people find books they are looking for, conduct research, download eBooks, troubleshoot computer problems, navigate the Internet, and much more. I often assist people with consumer purchasing decisions by helping them search print and electronic versions of Consumer Reports, which we can access through MasterFile Premier, a database that Easttown Library has purchased for our users. One of the best parts of my job is that each day customers ask me unexpected questions and I am always learning new things, right along with them.

As part of my job, I spend a portion of my time planning adult and family programs. Right now I am excited about a very special program that is scheduled for May 22nd. The Easttown Library will be hosting Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab, a unique organization that certifies sustainable businesses. B Lab is located right here in Berwyn and this event is a great opportunity to meet Jay, a local innovator, and to learn about how businesses can help to solve environmental and social problems. Keep an eye on our website for details and registration information about this program, and many more exciting upcoming events.

Easttown Library is truly the heart of the community. Working here has given me the opportunity to learn a great deal about this area and to meet many friendly people. Every day, I feel lucky to have found such a vibrant and stimulating library as a place of employment. Please feel free to stop by the Information Desk next time you are in the Library to ask me a question, or simply to say hi.

Check Out The Changes

There is a new Korner at the Library. This additional work and seating space was made possible by gifts made in memory of Craig Koch a former member of the Library Board who passed away in February 2011.  Renamed Koch's Korner this renovation offers a a beautiful view of the courtyard and has already become a well used area of the Library.

McLean Contributionship
Easttown Library was honored to receive a grant from the McLean Contributionship.  This grant      supported the redesign of the entrance from the lobby into the main area of the Library.  One of the library's core services is providing access to current information and materials for local residents as well as all users of the Chester County Library System. This redesign allows the Library to better serve our more than 600 daily visitors. For the full slide show click here.

My Morning as a Volunteer at

Easttown Library

For the last four plus years I have been a volunteer at Easttown Library. It has been a very enjoyable and satisfying experience.

My morning begins at 8:45 a.m. with paging slips which list Easttown Library items on hold for users of all of the 18 public libraries in Chester County. I gather the books, CDs, DVDs, etc. from our collection, generate hold slips that identify who is getting the item, and then either put them on our holds shelf or put them in the proper van bags designated for delivery to readers at other libraries in the County.  The length of the list varies; at times there are as many as ninety or more items!

When the van delivers bags of materials from other libraries, I begin my second responsibility of the morning. I separate the Easttown items which were returned to other libraries from the items that are requested for pick-up at Easttown Library. This process is time consuming -- at times there are more than 200 items to process.

In between these two main responsibilities, Sue Harris, a Library staff person who oversees some of the volunteers, may ask me to look for missing materials or to help with the shelving of returned items.  Occasionally I am asked to help with mailings and do other jobs that need attention.  I usually leave the Library around noon with the sense of a morning well spent.

Easttown Library is a wonderful place to serve the community.  The staff is friendly and courteous to the volunteers and to the public.  It is a place bustling with energy, providing a myriad of activities for the entire community and I am please to contribute a small part.                                            Charlotte Schmucker
