Meet Easttown Library's Newest Staff Member Kassel Coover

Kassel CooverIn January 2012, I began working at Easttown Library. Libraries have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. In first grade, a librarian nurtured my love for reading and writing and prompted me to write my first story.  As a teenager I worked as a page at a public library in New York. I enjoyed shelving books in the children's section and looked forward to interaction with customers.

Libraries have moved beyond the days of simply loaning books. They offer activities for a variety of ages-from tiny tots to seniors-thanks to programming by library staff and other organizations who use the library's facilities. Libraries also function as small business centers where consumers can use the Internet, make copies, send faxes, book meeting rooms, and get documents notarized.

Working at Easttown Library allows me to wear many hats. In addition to checking out materials, I offer information on library activities, make recommendations on materials, and assist people with downloading materials onto their e-readers.  It has been a joy to assist customers and work with an amazing staff.

Libraries and their services are not fading away; they're adapting to a rapidly changing world. If you stop by the Library and see me, please say hello. It's a pleasure meeting members of the community in which I serve.

When people ask if I have
a favorite place to visit, or
a favorite thing to do, why are they so perplexed when I mention how much I love going to the library?

I guess in this overscheduled, overpriced world we live in, people expect me to mention some high-profile place like an elegant spa, or perhaps a
hot yoga class, where I can be one with my inner self.
But for me, no matter where I am in my life, the one constant that has always given me a sense of peace, a sense of place, is my local library.

Maybe my affinity for the library started as a young girl, when our kindergarten teacher had us grab a buddy's hand as we went to visit our school library. Struggling to stay quiet, we'd tiptoe through the wooden bookshelves, and sit down wide-eyed on a fuzzy floor mat, as she regaled us with her interpretation of Charlotte's Web, Madeline, or Corduroy. I wanted to learn to read, now!

And my love for the library isn't just contained to my local hometown. When I travel, I love to visit that area's local library. Whether it's London, Bermuda, Cape Cod, or NYC, these local libraries, usually steeped in history and architecture, provide a unique snapshot of local culture you can't necessarily get anywhere else.

So it made sense when my husband and I relocated to this area from Northern NJ two years ago, that one of the first things I would do, would be to join my local library. Where else could I connect immediately with my community, while also still being able to enjoy a delicious escape?

Becoming a board member of Easttown was the obvious next step in my relationship's evolution. I could finally give something of me back to the place which had always given so much to me.

In these tough economic times, when funding is being cut left and right and people have to cut back on extra-curricular activities, Easttown Library is busier than ever. Why? Because now, more than ever, it's a place where one can still get so much for so little; you can travel to a far off land, learn a new skill, join a club, or simply kick back and enjoy all the things that a good book, or
e-book for that matter, can do for you.

So the next time you're in our library, take a moment to look around and reflect on all of the good things this old friend does for you. I'll be the one in the corner, with the giant stack of books, trying to convince myself that I can read all of them in just three weeks. Now where did I put my library card?
