Many Thanks to Árpád Szoboszlay

On February 1, 2012, the Hungarian Catholic Mission launched its new web site; none of which could have been possible without the financial help and dedication of Árpád Joseph Szoboszlay and technical support of Norman Reich. Your tireless efforts in developing and implementing our web site has enabled the viewer to learn more about our Hungarian identity through our three tenants of Faith, Culture and Charity.

Árpád has made the impossible happen and has done a great job identifying where the Hungarians are living in the United States. You can find demographic maps depicting Hungarian by ethnic density. You can also see where Hungarian-American Churches, Organizations, and Business are located.

What I like about our new website is the concept of inclusiveness. I especially like the Prayer Candle where the viewer can make a private or public prayer with the background of Saint Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest and the beautiful background music of “Ave Maria.” There is so much done that I cannot express enough gratitude for your hard work.

You have definitely enabled our Hungarian Catholic Mission to grow and to better support needy Hungarians; locally, nationally, and internationally. I have promised Árpád a beautiful Hungarian dinner when he comes visits us in April 2012. I am going to hold you to that. Thanks again for the beautiful web site. I know God has bestowed many blessings to you and your family.

February 1st, 2012.

The Pastor's Message

I would like to welcome our family and friends at the Hungarian Catholic Mission. This is our first Hungarian Catholic Mission Quarterly Newsletter for 2012. As your Pastor, my heart is overjoyed with gratitude and great excitement. During the last six months, lots of behind the scenes changes have been taking place in our approach and our increased ability to keep and deepen our Faith, our Hungarian Culture and Charity programs. We are a thriving, enthusiastic and supportive community. As individual Christians and as a Christian Community, we have to make a sincere effort and commitment to practice our faith. We also commit ourselves to preserve our Hungarian heritage and extend our help to those who are less fortunate.

One of the most noticeable changes you will find is our new website that took six months to develop, research, test and implement. I ask that you please look at our web site. It is a very good reflection of who we are as a faith-based community. Our web site can be found at:

www.HungarianCatholicMission.com

Our new Website is a gift and a blessing, but also a challenge to live up to its promises. That takes a serious commitment on the part of every member of our community.

The primary and most important commitment we all can do is deepen our faith in the Lord from whom all good things come. Let’s turn to Him with daily prayers to bless our Hungarian Catholic Mission. We are a good, but aging community with 300 addresses on our mailing list and 50-60 regularly attending families on our Sunday services. Our greatest challenge and responsibility, therefore, is to “rejuvenate” our community. We must expand by welcoming young couples with children. I challenge every member of the Hungarian Catholic Mission Community to make a resolution to reach out among his or her circle of friends in the wider Hungarian community and actively, lovingly recruit new members to our Hungarian Catholic Mission.

I also ask that you make contact with young, professional Hungarian couples that are arriving from our home country to California. We warmly welcome couples where one spouse does not speak Hungarian. At the Hungarian Catholic Mission, we are a community of inclusiveness. We conduct our social events and activities bilingually. We are a community who prays together and are committed to support one another and reach out lovingly towards those who are in need of spiritual support. Please take the time and get familiar with our goals and aspirations. Contact us if you have any questions.

May God bless and keep you in His loving care. I look forward to seeing you all in the months ahead.

Father Maurus Nemeth OSB
Pastor of the Hungarian Catholic Mission

Faith

Hungarian Catholic Faith is deeply rooted in our Roman Catholic Culture. Do you know the history of the Hungarian Catholic Church in Hungary? If not, visit our web site (www.hungarianatholicmission.com) where you can learn Hungarian History. Know the difference between Hungarian Catholics and Greek Catholics. See through faith, our Catholic faith and the Jewish people. Know all 22 of our Hungarian Saints. Finally, through FAITH, you will know where the Hungarian Churches of all faiths are located in the United States, Canada and abroad. FAITH is a personal experience with God. Let us all broaden our horizon by serving the Lord.

Culture

As a first generation Hungarian-American, I am amazed on how quickly our Hungarian identity is disappearing on the American landscape. With 1.4M Hungarian-American living in the US, less than a quarter can speak their native language. I ask that you look at our web site (www.HungarianCatholicMission.com) and look at our home page. You will find all Hungarian churches of all faiths, Hungarian organizations and Hungarian businesses. In preserving our Hungarian identity, it is important to know where we as Hungarians are in the United States. I ask that you review our Hungarian culture link. My favorite is famous Hungarians.

We are very proud of our Hungarian Culture and brought many American friends to this concert to give them a little taste of our music. During the two 50 minute performances the audience’s hands became red from all the applauses. At the end of the concert, the musicians were honored with a standing ovation by the audience. Thank you for bringing your beautiful Hungarian music to our Hungarian Catholic Mission.

Charity

Here is a quick Snapshot of our foundations and our fundraising goals for 2012. We have provided help to hundreds of Hungarians of all faiths to ensure the homeless, the sick and the needy are given a chance to succeed. Our Mission supports orphanages, battered women shelters, families of disaster victims, and scholarships for Hungarian children. Even today, many Hungarians living in the mother country and its border countries live well below the poverty line.

I ask that you review our Charity programs on our web site and see what we are doing to help needy Hungarians locally, nationally and internationally. Since the start of the new year, we at the Hungarian Catholic Mission have allocated $14,000 for our different charitable foundations. We are also very excited about Father Maurus going to Hungary this summer to ramp up our Ministry Abroad Program. This program is seeking the Bishop’s and Cardinals approval to begin a fellowship program whereby Hungarian priests in the Mother Country will be accepted into a 3-5 year fellowship program to work with the Hungarian Catholic Community of the San Francisco Bay Area. We wish Father Maurus the best as he embarks on maintaining and expanding our charity programs.

2500 város közös imája a Szentföldért

Immáron negyedik alkalommal kerül sor vasárnap, január 29-én arra a nemzetközi imanapra, amely a Szentföld és az egész világ békéjéért szól. A Föld 2500 városa mond fohászt a kiengesztelõdésért.

A vitatott intézkedésrõl nyilatkozott a Vatikáni Rádiónak Carlo Cardia jogász, a Roma Tre Egyetem egyházjogi tanára.

A lelkiismereti tiltakozás elõször a katonai szolgálattal kapcsolatban került elõtérbe, amikor a haza védelmének értéke háttérbe szorult a fegyverfogás elutasításával szemben.
