Student Board Representatives

The Pasco School District Board of Directors welcomes 2012-2013 School Board Student Representatives Nallely Centeno and Ignacio Bayardo, who were sworn in at the board meeting July 24. Centeno attends Delta High School and Bayardo attends Pasco High School. Both are seniors this year.

Nallely Centeno will be a member of Delta High's first graduating class, the Class of 2013, and the first in her family to go to college. Recalling the moment she was accepted to Delta, Centeno says, "That's when my life changed." She credits Delta for helping her focus on her education and her future. She hopes to study psychology at Johns Hopkins University or UCLA.

Ignacio Bayardo

Ignacio Bayardo has taken Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish, AP Biology (one of his favorite classes), AP History and is enrolled in AP Chemistry and AP English this year. He says he was inspired to apply for the leadership position by his grandpa, Primitivo Bayardo, who is a former parent leader for Pasco School District's Migrant and Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (PAC). He has his sights set on a degree in biochemistry at Harvard with the goal of attending medical school.

"We are pleased to welcome these bright and enthusiastic students to the board," says Board President Sherry Lancon.

Pasco Earns Sixth Straight District Partnerships Award

For the sixth consecutive year the Pasco School District Parent and Community Partnership Program won a Partnership District Award from the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) at Johns Hopkins University for 2012.

Pasco was honored for continuing to make excellent progress in guiding schools to develop goal-oriented programs for school, family, and community partnerships. Essential elements of district leadership on partnerships include teamwork, leadership, goal-linked plans for action, implementation, facilitation, evaluation, and network connections.

Additionally, three schools were also selected for the NNPS 2012 Partnership School Award: Twain Elementary School (third time winner), McGee Elementary School (third time winner), and Markham Elementary School (first time winner).

The schools' Action Teams for Partnerships (ATP) planned and implemented the school activities Family Fun Zone (McGee), Dads and Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham (Markham), and Read for the Record Kick Off (Twain), which, along with outstanding activities from Angelou Elementary, Livingston Elementary, Robinson Elementary, McLoughlin Middle School, Ochoa Middle School, and the District, will be published in the 2012 NNPS Promising Partnership Practices collection.

"Pasco School District is demonstrating that research-based approaches can be used to make every school a welcoming place and to improve student attendance, behavior, achievement, and high school graduation rates," said Dr. Joyce L. Epstein, Director of NNPS.

PEAK! Partners

PEAK LogoThis school year begins the fourth year of the PEAK! Program, which offers local businesses and organizations the opportunity to become involved partners in Pasco Schools. Each school has two PEAK! Partners.

PEAK! Partners enter into a contract with the District for the school year. PEAK! Partners pay $500 which goes directly to their partner school. This money can be used for rewards, awards, parties, prizes for math and science nights, and other activities that cannot be paid for with State funds.

More importantly the business also agrees to participate in three activities with their partner school during the school year. These activities range from reading to students during Read Across America Week to large scale organized events including contests, themed math and science nights, and even field trips to local businesses.

PEAK! activities make a positive impact in students' lives and the school community as a whole. Please help us welcome and support our new and returning PEAK! Partners this year, and help spread the word about PEAK!. If you know of a business or organization that may be interested in this innovative program, contact Community Relations Manager Gracie Valle-Chimal at (509) 543-6743.
