Survey Opportunity for Parents

The WestEd Center for Prevention and Early Intervention, under contract with the California Department of Education to coordinate and support the Family Empowerment and Disability Council (FEDC), is conducting a statewide survey of parents and guardians of California students who receive special education services. The purpose of the survey is to identify the ongoing and emerging information, support, and training needs of families. Data from the survey will be used to inform and improve the activities and build the capacity of family empowerment centers to continue to meet the needs families related to special education.

The survey can be completed online. Here is the link to the survey:

Articles for Reflection and Professional Development

This is an ongoing section where we will provide a current and relevant research article. The goal is to promote discussion and intellectual stimulation amongst SFUSD staff, schools, and the community.

In the article Segragated Programs Versus Integrated Comprehensive Service Delivery for All Learners, Elise Frattura and Colleen A. Capper make the strong and compelling case to shift away from fragmented services occuring outside the general education setting to providing services within the general education setting.  If you have not done so previously, take a few minutes to read this article which was submitted as part of the Urban Collaborative's Audit of Special Education Serivces in SFUSD.  Click here  to read more.

Compliance Update

If a student receiving special education services will be graduating from high school with a regular high school diploma, prior written notice is required.

This notice must be given to the parent or the student if they have reached the age of majority (18 years of age).

In order to reflect this compliance issue in Goalview, you will need to write 'discussion of graduation with regular diploma'  in the field marked other under Purpose of Meeting.

Graduation  should be discussed at each IEP meeting, starting when the child is 16, as part of the transition planning. This discussion should happen as part of regularly scheduled  IEP meetings.

 Grant Opportunity from CRESH

What could you do with $1,000? The 2012 Grants Program from CRESH is now accepting applications. The grants, up to $1,000, may be used to make evidence-based interventions for social-emotional health available for children and families.

CRESH grants are open to individuals and organizations that provide direct service to children and families, including teachers, schools, and school district personnel; community health providers; clinicians in private practice; and others in the health, human services, and educational fields.

Grant applications will be evaluated for their likely impact on children's social-emotional health, the degree to which the benefits can be measured, the overall feasibility of the project, and likelihood that the evidence-based intervention will be sustained over time.

The window for submitting grant applications will remain open until December 11, 2011. Award notifications will be made in late January 2012.

For more information about the CRESH 2012 Grants Program, and to submit an application, please visit http://www.cresh.org/apply.
