Ramirez meets HealthierUS School Challenge
The Ramirez Charter School earned the HealthierUS School Challenge Gold Award last spring in recognition of their efforts to support and improve the health of their students. Specifically, featuring healthy items on their menus and emphasizing physical education and activities. Their efforts are part of the HealthierUS School Challenge. The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. To qualify for an award, a school must submit a formal application, meet detailed criteria set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, have a local school wellness policy and commit to standards throughout their four-year certification period. Ramirez Elementary School qualified for the Gold Award. The HUSSC application process was led by Kristea Rasmussen, marketing manager for ARAMARK in Lubbock ISD. A team of school professionals and a representative of the parent organization reviewed the application and included Nancy Parker, Principal; Yolanda R. Gonzaga, Schools Parent Organization Representative; and Paul Belk, Physical Education/Health Teacher. Special recognition is also due to the school nutrition staff for their efforts in achieving school lunch menu changes leading to a HUSSC Gold award.

LISD personnel recognized with regional and state awards
Three Lubbock ISD educators have recently been selected for regional or state accolades. They are Scott Firenza, Lori Stephens and Myrna Grimson. Scott Firenza, technology demonstration teacher for professional development, was named the Texas Business and Technology Educators Association regional and state Technology Support Specialist of the Year. | Scott Firenza
| The award recognizes Firenza's outstanding contributions to education through his knowledge of technology and his willingness to always assist teachers in a prompt, professional manner. In her nomination letter, Monterey technology teacher Jane O'Pry said, in part, "Scott is a true professional. I have worked with him on many occasions and have asked him what seems like hundreds of questions. He is always polite, clear and patient. Not only does he answer the questions brought to him, but he does it in a way that does not make one feel inferior."
Lori Stephens, assistant principal of Evans Middle School in Lubbock ISD, has been selected to represent the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) as the Region 17 Outstanding Assistant Principal of
 | Lori Stephens | the year. TASSP recognizes outstanding principals and assistant principals from the twenty region Education Service Centers in the state. School administrators are nominated and chosen by their peers within their regions. As the Region 17 winner, Stephens is eligible to compete for the state title of Texas Assistant Principal of the Year. According to Evans Principal Flo Touchstone, "Lori is a positive and energetic person who always has the best interest of our students at heart. She works hard to support our teachers. She's a little fireball, really."
Myrna Grimson, autism specialist, was named the Texas Tech University Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research Teacher of the Year.
 | Myrna Grimson |
The recognition identifies Grimson as an outstanding educator, with more than 30 years of experience in special education. Colleague Becky Critz says, "Myrna knows how to teach children with autism. She has a repertoire of teaching and behavior strategies that amaze even the most experienced teachers." In addition to being a research and education facility in the Texas Tech College of Education, the Burkhart Center also provides services to individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
Congratulations and thanks to Firenza, Stephens and Grimson for the honor and distinction they bring to themselves and to Lubbock ISD.

2012 LISD graduates excel on ACT measures
According to a recent report from ACT, Lubbock ISD students achieved a composite ACT Score of 21.0 which was higher than the state average of 20.8. The results include students who graduated in May 2012 and took the assessment during their sophomore, junior or senior year. This is the highest composite score for Lubbock ISD since 2008. Additionally, LISD's African American population also achieved its highest ACT scores since 2008.
The most recent ACT College Readiness Benchmark Scores indicate that 26 percent of LISD high school graduates met all four indicators (English, Math, Reading, and Science), compared to 22 percent last year. Considered an indication of college readiness, the LISD scores exceeded the state, at 24 percent, and the nation, at 25 percent.

A 90-second news segment featuring LISD students and teachers, "Out and About" has highlighted hundreds of positive news items within Lubbock ISD for almost 20 years. New school year, new education commissioner
As of September 1, 2012, Michael L. Williams of Arlington becomes the new commissioner of education for Texas. Governor Rick Perry named Williams to the post on August 27. As of head the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Williams will oversee the state's 1,200 school districts and charter schools. Williams, the child of two educators, is the first African-American commissioner of education in the state's history.
Williams is the former chairman of the Railroad Commission of Texas, the state's oldest regulatory agency. He was first appointed to the commission in 1998, by then Gov. George W. Bush, was re-elected and served until April 2011.
Prior to his service on the Railroad Commission, Williams was the assistant secretary of education for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Education and deputy assistant secretary for law enforcement at the U.S. Department of Treasury under President George H.W. Bush. Williams is a former adjunct professor at the Texas Southern University School of Public Affairs and Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

Time to give a SHOUT OUT to your peers
Once again, parents, community members and Lubbock ISD employees can recognize any LISD employee for their hard work and dedication to the mission of LISD by submitting a SHOUT OUT. The form can be found on the "District Information and News" tab on the tool bar at the top of the LISD Web site or by clicking on the red megaphone to the left. It is also linked
from the Communications and Community Relations Web site.
A SHOUT OUT is an easy, online form which will generate 25 words of text onto a megaphone-shaped document recognizing the work of an LISD employee. (See attached sample). A SHOUT OUT can also be submitted for an employee of our partners at ARAMARK, Durham and Sodexo.
This is a great opportunity to express gratitude to those people who make a difference in the lives of our students.
