More dental news to sink your teeth into
As announced in the May 11 edition of the E-Reporter, LISD will be changing its fiscal year to July 1, effective July 2012.  LISD will also change the dental reimbursement plan year from September 1 to July 1.  The plan year for dental reimbursement will be July 1 to June 30.

Accordingly, there will be an open enrollment for the dental plan beginning May 21, 2012 and ending on June 15, 2012.  During this period, employees may add or drop dependents by filling out the proper form and returning it to the Risk Management Office by June 15, 2012.  Any changes will be reflected on the July 27, 2012 paycheck.  Dependents added during this open enrollment period will have to satisfy a 90-day waiting period.  Dependents will be eligible for coverage as of October 2012.

No action is required if an employee wishes to remain at the current coverage.

Credit union scholarship winners announced
The Lubbock Teachers Federal Credit Union announced their 2012 LTFCU Scholarship recipients. Congratulations to Lezli Anderson, Clayton Brown and Caleb Lira from Coronado High School, and Morghan Bills from Monterey High School.  Each will receive $1,500.

To qualify, scholarship applicants must be a child of a credit union member and be graduating from an LISD high school. The winners were selected by a committee of former teachers and counselors.

Lezli Anderson is the daughter of Sheila Anderson, counselor at Maedgen and Bowie Elementary Schools; Clayton Brown is the son of LeaAnn Brown, counselor at Coronado; Caleb Lira is the son of Nancy Lira, registrar at Evans Middle School; and Morghan Bills is the daughter of Melody Bills, attendance clerk at Monterey High School.
LHS students get voting experience
LHS Vote
Student elections at Lubbock High School were conducted with the help of the Lubbock County Elections Office to allow students to use the same voting machines as in real elections for public office. Video recordings of the student candidates are shown to the student body, and then students go to the library to vote, provided they are wearing their permanent ID badge. The students use the badge to identify themselves to the poll officials provided by the county office. The badges ensure students get the appropriate ballot, much like a real election. The use of the county machines also allows for the real-time return of results when the election is over. According to Rick Woody, assistant principal for activities at LHS, the results can be posted within thirty minutes.
Graduations to be streamed live online
Again this year, LISD-TV, in partnership with Texas Tech University, is proud to provide streaming video for each of the LISD high school graduation ceremonies.  This means that friends or loved ones who might not be able to attend will be able to view the commencement exercises live on the Web.  A link will be provided on the LISD webpage for those who would like to view graduation in this way.  DVDs will also be available for purchase from LISD-TV.

PlainsCapital donates $3 million to LISD
PlainsCapital Press Event
Shown above (L to R) are Board of Trustees President James Arnold, Lubbock High band student Joseph Tackitt, Coronado football student Josh Sanchez, Estacado band student Justicia Mierau, Monterey football player Camden Arnold, and PlainsCapital Bank Regional Chairman John Owens.

On Thursday, Lubbock ISD announced a $3 million gift from PlainsCapital Bank as part of a sponsorship agreement which includes naming rights for the district's largest athletic complex, PlainsCapital Park. The gift will be utilized to enhance academic, fine arts and athletic initiatives within the district.

PlainsCapital Park will be the name of the athletic complex which houses Lowrey Field, where all LISD high school football games are played, Moegle Field, the home site for Monterey High School (MHS) baseball and the MHS softball facilities. All high school and middle school varsity track meets will also take place at PlainsCapital Park. In addition to the potential for many post-season play-off events, the stadium will also host UIL marching band competitions and events.

Lubbock ISD Superintendent Karen Garza, Ph.D. said, "The support of PlainsCapital Bank with a gift of this magnitude is very significant for our school district. These funds will enhance academic, fine arts and athletic endeavors in the district for many years to come." "This announcement is the next chapter in a long relationship with this valued partner," she added.

John Owens, PlainsCapital Bank regional chairman said, "PlainsCapital Bank has been a long-time supporter of the Lubbock community and we're pleased to be part of this project. We look forward to the new PlainsCapital Park and continuing to support LISD in its academic, fine arts and athletic initiatives."

Garza outlined the planned use of the funds to assist in several key areas. Technology will be provided for every campus in the district to assist teachers in non-core classes. The 2010 Bond provided interactive white boards (SmartBoards), document cameras and projectors to teachers in core classes: math, science, English/language arts and social studies.

In addition to new signage and a new scoreboard for the football stadium, additional funding for fine arts will also be made available due to the PlainsCapital Bank donation. Classroom teachers were also provided with monies from this donation to offset out-of-pocket expenditures made for supplies and materials as they have implemented new curriculum in preparation for the state's new STAAR test.

With improvements to the 51 year-old complex provided by the 2010 Bond Election, the facility will be more attractive for hosting post-season play-offs and additional UIL events. LISD Board President James Arnold said, "The new PlainsCapital Park will host a variety of events from UIL competitions, playoff games, along with other regional contests. The economic development opportunities will benefit Lubbock for decades to come. The partnership with PlainsCapital made it happen."
Two high school yearbooks in national spotlight
Yearbooks for 2012 from both Lubbock High School (LHS) and Monterey High School (MHS) have earned nationwide recognition this year by being selected as National Sample Books by their publisher, Balfour. National Sample Books are chosen for their ingenuity and leadership qualities in the field of journalism.  Other criteria include extensive coverage, unique secondary coverage ideas, and trend setting graphic designs to name a few. They are ultimately chosen by nationally ranked advisors and yearbook representatives from a field representing less than four percent of all yearbooks submitted throughout the entire country.
Monterey Yearbook
Shown at right are Monterey yearbook editor-in-chief Jaymie Pierce (left) and assistant editor Christina Cuevas (right).

Editors for the Monterey Chaparral are Jamie Pierce and Christina Cuevas. MHS Journalism teacher Shelly Smith said, "Christina and Jaymie spent countless hours each week designing pages, editing pages, and working with the staff to ensure the yearbook reflected both the theme and the students and staff of Monterey." "I am very proud of their efforts, leadership, and their beautiful yearbook," she added.
LHS Yearbook
Shown at right are Lubbock High School yearbook Editor-in-Chief Alyvia Beikmann (right) and Assistant Editor Ashley Ledesma (left).

This is the second consecutive year for the LHS Westerner yearbook to have distinguished itself as a National Sample Book, a significant achievement for the editors, Alyvia Beikmann and Ashley Ledesma.  Lubbock High journalism teacher Kymberlee Douglass remarked, "Time, dedication and tireless effort are words often thrown around with little back bone and meaning, but Alyvia Beikmann and Ashley Ledesma lived by these words for the past 10 months.  I am so proud of them."  "Sarah Lambert and Phyllis Goode established a great example with their National Sample Book last year.  This year, Alyvia and Ashley kept that ball rolling and improved on it," Douglass added.
Retirees encouraged to "shake it off"
A total of 102 retirees from Lubbock ISD and Sodexo are listed below.  When their experience it totaled, the number of years is impressive, 2,912Mamie to be precise.  Many of the names on this list were treated to a wonderful meal at the district's annual retirement banquet Thursday evening.  They were also entertained by speaker Mamie McCollough (shown at right) who encouraged the audience to "shake off" negative feelings and negative people.
