Secondary music groups generate 38 sweepstakes
Secondary band, choirs and orchestras recently garnered an impressive number of sweepstakes trophies totaling 38.  The varsity high school bands face a three-event challenge in order to win the coveted sweepstakes trophy.  They must earn first division ratings in marching, concert and sight reading.  All other secondary music groups (including non-varsity bands) face a two-event challenge and must earn first divisions in both concert and sight reading.

When asked to comment on the significance of this number of sweepstakes, LISD Fine Arts Director Will Burks said, "We're certainly proud of the groups that earned sweepstakes, but that's not the ultimate goal.  The ultimate goal is to make sure that every student is learning and progressing.  With quality teaching, the awards will take care of themselves."
Texas celebrates School Nurses Day
Governor Rick Perry recently issued a proclamation declaring Wednesday, May 9 as School Nurse Day in Texas.  The proclamation reads in part, "...School nurses are an important part of a child's health support network, working in collaboration with families, schools and communities.  These health care professionals have to be ready for almost everything, from dealing with a child's chronic condition to filling the role of first responder in an emergency situation."

School nurses are now on every LISD campus.  Please take time to convey thanks and appreciation for the remarkable job they are doing.

Teachers of the Year announced for LISD
Teachers of the Year 2012 Rev
Shown above (L to R) are Superintendent Karen Garza, Ph.D., Secondary Teacher of the Year Kara Swindell, Elementary Teacher of the Year Andrea Gibson and LISD Board President James Arnold.

While neither woman initially planned to be a teacher, the two educators named Lubbock ISD Teachers of the Year for 2012 attained the highest recognition given by LISD. Andrea Gibson, a fourth-grade math and science teacher from Stewart Elementary, initially planned a career in the medical field, worked as a probation officer and even explored working for the FBI, before finding her life's calling as a teacher. Gibson was named the Elementary Teacher of the Year at a banquet honoring the eight quadrant finalists on May 3. Gibson was greatly influenced by her own high school science teacher who made a big impact on her life. She wants her students to learn the internal satisfaction of a job well done.  Gibson said, "The reward is the work they did and the knowledge they gained."

Secondary Teacher of the Year Kara Swindell, science teacher at the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders, dreamed of being a coach. In order to fulfill this goal, she knew she would also have a career in teaching. After working for several years as both a coach and teacher, Swindell's desire to prepare quality science instruction for students began taking more time than coaching would allow. As someone who strives to be the very best, she decided to focus all her drive, energy and enthusiasm on perfecting her art of teaching. She's described by her colleagues as a very creative teacher. Berta Fogerson, principal at Talkington SYWL, said of Swindell, "She is an exceptional teacher. Often students don't even realize that what they are learning is part of an academic curriculum that has been set out for them because it is so applicable to what they do on a day-to-day basis."

Estacado experiences "Shattered Dreams"
EHS Shattered Dreams
Estacado High School (EHS) students, faculty and staff were given the chance to experience what truly shattered dreams might look, sound and feel like when emergency vehicles came screaming onto their campus Wednesday morning.  In the photo above, EHS criminal justice instructor Lucio Trevino poses with students Raquel Lopez (left) and Faith Flores (right).  Lopez and Flores were made up to appear as though they had been victims in a mock accident. According to the storyline, Lopez's character was killed because her friend was texting while driving and Flores' character was killed because her boyfriend was driving drunk. The Shattered Dreams program is designed to remind everyone about the dangers of driving while intoxicated or while distracted.
