February is Career & Technical Education month
Lubbock ISD's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program celebrates February as CTE Month along with the many other CTE programs across the State of Texas and the nation.
CTE prepares both youth and adults for a wide range of careers and further educational opportunities. These careers may require varying levels of education - including industry-recognized credentials, postsecondary certificates and two- and four-year degrees.
This year, the vast majority of Lubbock ISD high school students (6,283) are enrolled in CTE classes and 1,586 middle school students also participate in CTE.
With more than 100 CTE classes offered in LISD, students have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of careers including: entrepreneurship, automotive technician, architecture, carpentry, nursing, medical technician, careers related to food and fiber production and agribusiness, culinary arts, management and life skills, marketing, digital graphics, technology, engineering and many more.
CTE is at the forefront of preparing students to be "college-and career-ready." CTE equips students with: ● core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities, ● employability skills (such as critical thinking and responsibility) that are essential in any career area and ● job-specific, technical skills related to a specific career pathway.

Council PTA scholarship offered to seniors
Graduating seniors interested in pursuing a degree in education are encouraged to apply for the LISD Council of PTAs scholarship. Applications can be found in the counseling office and must include a letter of recommendation from the student's assigned counselor.
Counselors will select the top three candidates from their high school, which will then be sent to Associate Superintendent Mr. Doyle Vogler. Interviews will be conducted by the scholarship committee of the Council of PTAs and winners will be recognized at the Spring Awards Luncheon in May. To avoid missing rapidly approaching deadlines, be sure to contact high school counselors for details.
Scholarships for graduating seniors are funded by the annual used book sale which will be at the South Plains Mall on Thursday, March 1, through Saturday, March 3. Teacher Preview Night will be held Wednesday, February 29. Participants should start collecting books.

Centennial history books
Every Lubbock ISD school library was provided with at least two copies of "The Centennial History of Lubbock: Hub of the Plains," by the Lubbock Centennial Committee. The beautiful coffee-table books, written by Paul H. Carlson, and including contributions by Donald R. Abbe and Monte L. Monroe, chronicle the history of Lubbock in pictures and text.
