It is back to work now that the holidays are over, and we have been very busy with our open source project releases! The much anticipated ITK 4.0.0 has been released, CMake has moved up to version 2.8.7, Midas has advanced to version 3.2, and Slicer has moved forward to version 4.0.1. Check out our newly designed Solutions and Team pages on our website. We are excited to announce that we'll have our very own booth at Supercomputing this year, although we have quite a few other conferences before November (our Medical Team is at the NA-MIC Project Week right now, and then will be preparing for the IGSTK User Group Meeting and SPIE Medical Imaging in early February.) We hope to see you at an upcoming event!

Two Employees Honored for a Decade of Dedication

Kitware recently honored two employees for their dedication to the company over the past decade.

Dr. Sébastien Barré joined Kitware in September of 2001 and has been an invaluable member of the medical imaging and software development teams. He is the primary architect of the company's internal back-office software, KWiK, a critical component of the daily workflow at Kitware.

Dr. Luis Ibáńez joined Kitware in January of 2002 and is now a Technical Leader on the medical imaging team. He is a staunch supporter of Open Science and Open Culture, and his enthusiasm and dedication have helped build Kitware's reputation as an open source company.

New Improvements for Better Builds

Kitware and the CMake team are pleased to announce the release of CMake 2.8.7. The CMake binaries for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X are available on the CMake download page.

This release features the addition of new commands for computing hash values and cryptographic hash implementations for security, as well as a host of other improvements and updates, which can be found in the change log. We also hosted a webinar on January 4th to highlight the updates and give an overivew of what's in the pipeline.
story3 ITK 4.0.0 Release

Modularization and a New Development Process

On December 20, 2011, ITK 4.0.0 was successfully released. This major release is the outcome of 18 months of refactoring efforts, generously sponsored by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) with funds provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Some highlights of the ITK 4.0.0 release include modularization, a simplified accessibility layer called "SimpleITK," new frameworks for registration and level setting, a newly-refactored finite element (FEM) framework, video processing support, updated DICOM support based on GDCM 2.0, and improved support for large microscopy images above 4 GB. The development process also migrated to Git and Gerrit.

This is an historic event for the ITK community, made possible by a large collaborative team of developers. To see the evolution of ITK 4.0.0, view the ITK Code Swarm video. We've also added the release webinar to the ITK website, providing an introduction to some of the newest features.

story4Midas 3.2 Release

Improvements Provide Flexibility, Robustness, and Speed

The Midas Team recently announced the release of Midas 3.2.  New features in this digital archiving and distributed system were covered in a public webinar on January 4th, 2012.

With the 3.2 release, Midas has switched from CakePHP to the Zend Framework, and the core system has been completely refactored to provide increased stability and modularity. The web interface has also been redesigned to provide quicker user interaction and a better overall user experience. A full list of changes and resolved issues addressed in Midas 3.2 can be found on the Midas wiki.

story5Kitware Celebrates the Holidays

Food, Fun, and Fantastic Balloons!

Each year, Kitware celebrates the holidays  with a company-wide party for employees and their families. We've grown quite a bit since our first gathering, with more than 200 people in attendance between the two parties in NY and NC.  This is quite the jump from 19 guests in 2000. Check out this blog post for the comparative pictures!

Everyone was wined, dined and entertained, particularly the children who were captivated by magicians, balloon artists and movies. At both parties, Will Schroeder and Rick Avila gave a presentation with highlights from the year past, pulling from Kitware's social media updates and an arsenal of company photos, to the delight of the guests.
