If you are heading to MICCAI or VisWeek, be sure to look for us there. We are sponsoring both of those events, and we will be there demonstrating our new efforts in mobile computing. Want to discuss possible collaboration ideas or employment opportunities? We'd be happy to set up a meeting - just let us know by sending email to kitware@kitware.com.

KiwiViewer
Mobile Visualization App Available for iPad and iPhone
KiwiViewer, Kitware's visualization application developed exclusively for mobile devices, debuted in the Apple App store on August 22 and was updated in early September. The free, interactive application for exploring geometric datasets is now ready for download for iPad and iPhone.
The application allows users to access 3D datasets from email attachments or through Dropbox and easily pan, zoom, and rotate with intuitive multi-touch gestures. It is built on our new VES toolkit to support OpenGL ES rendering and multi-touch interaction, and VTK for data loading and filtering.
Kitware plans to demonstrate KiwiViewer at several upcoming conferences including MICCAI in Toronto in late September, and VisWeek in Providence in late October. If you would like to set up a meeting at one of these venues, or schedule a phone conversation to discuss your mobile computing needs, please contact us at kitware@kitware.com or (518) 371-3971.

Sustained Growth
Kitware Ranked #1572 by Inc. 5000 Based On 3 Year Growth For the fourth year running, Kitware made the Inc. 5000 list, an exclusive ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. Kitware earned the #1572 spot based on three-year growth of 175%, and we came in at #118 in our industry. Our rapid growth can be attributed to the talented people who work here and the success of our open-source business model. This success has fueled the need for additional talented, passionate people on the Kitware team. We have already hired 23 new employees in 2011 and still have many positions to fill by the end of the year.
Do you know someone who has what it takes to join the Kitware team? We are always looking for talented software developers and researchers in areas such as computer vision, medical imaging, scientific visualization and informatics. Send all resumes to jobs@kitware.com. |
Room to Grow
Kitware Expands in Both New York and North Carolina
With all of our new employees and interns, our offices in both Clifton Park and Carrboro became a bit snug this summer. Luckily, we've managed to secure additional space in both locations, adding 10,000 square feet to our headquarters in New York, and 2,000 square feet to our North Carolina office. In North Carolina the new space is contiguous with the existing office space; however in New York you can often see employees zipping across the parking lot from building 28 to building 21 on scooters and skateboards. In addition to having more breathing room and open work spaces, the new Clifton Park location includes a large conference room where we look forward to hosting a number of courses and community events, including an upcoming Tech Valley Talk. Look for more information on the talk on our website, and in the October issue of the Edge. |
NIH SBIR Phase I Awards
Kitware Working in Digital Pathology and Time Lapse Imaging Kitware has been awarded two $150,000 SBIR Phase I grants from the National Institutes of Health, continuing our track record of applying open-source systems to solving timely biomedical research challenges. Dr. Charles Law, VP of Strategic Growth at Kitware, will be the Principal Investigator and lead the projects at Kitware.
The first project, titled "An Open Source Digital Pathology System Supporting Multi-Touch Interaction," will focus on the development of a freely-available, multi-platform, pen-source system for processing slide image data for integration of digital pathology into hospital-wide clinical information systems.
For the second grant, "Large-Scale Time Lapse Imaging to Monitor Neuroplasticity and Circuit Function," Dr. Law and his team will build an open-source software system for managing the acquisition, storage and retrieval of massive time-lapse microscopy datasets.
For more information on these projects or regarding collaboration with us on a government proposal, contact us at kitware@kitware.com |
Fun and Games
Kitware's Clifton Park Offices Head to the Artificial Turf
Kitware kicked off its newest company event, "Kitware Fun and Games," in August. Rick Avila organized a trip to the Halfmoon Sportsplex (just a short walk from our Clifton Park offices) to give Kitware employees a chance to relax while engaging in some sports. There was some internal debate as to which sport to play (nominees included soccer, juggling, ultimate frisbee, and pickleball), but the group decided on a riveting, 1 hour and 45 minute soccer match. It turns out there are some splendid Kitware athletes - David Beckham watch out! We'll be getting together monthly to play, rotating the activity each month.
