It has been a busy month here at Kitware with many new employees and interns starting, and expansion plans underway at both our Clifton Park and Carrboro offices. We attended eight conferences in the month of June, we put out releases for both CMake and Slicer, and we are excited about the upcoming release of KiwiViewer - our newest endeavor in mobile computing.
We hope you are having a great summer too!

CVPR 2011 IEEE Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Workshop
Kitware team members Anthony Hoogs, Sangmin Oh, Arsalan Basharat, Naresh Cuntoor, Luis Ibáñez, Matt Leotta, Amitha Perera, Patrick Reyonds, and Matthew Turek attended the recent CVPR workshop in Colorado Springs, CO. The Kitware team was responsible for three presentations at CVPR. Anthony and Sangmin led the workshop "The VIRAT Video Dataset and Competition," which discussed video activity analysis and current challenges to the field. The dataset and initial results were presented. The tutorial "ITK Meets OpenCV: A New Open Source Software Resource for CV" was also presented as part of the conference. It was led by Luis, Matt, Amitha and Patrick. Later in the week, Anthony and Sangmin presented the paper "A Large-scale Benchmark Dataset for Event Recognition in Surveillance Video." The paper included an introduction to a large-scale video dataset for assessing the performance of diverse visual event algorithms with a focus on continuous visual event recognition (CVER) in outdoor, wide coverage areas. This work was a team effort with our collaborators; you can view the full author list on our Events page. |
CMake 2.8.5 RC3 Now Available for Testing
The third release candidate for CMake 2.8.5 was recently released on http://cmake.org. This release is a true global community effort with 33 developers contributing code from around the world. The new git workflow, and the fact that git patches preserve the author in the commit objects even when they are applied and pushed by someone else, mean that we can now measure and report this number. Are you using CMake? Be sure to update the "Notable Applications" list on Wikipedia, and contact us to be included in our CMake Success Stories. |
KiwiViewer Coming Soon to the Apple App Store
Kitware is set to release a new free, interactive visualization application, KiwiViewer. Supported in part by the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing (NAMIC), KiwiViewer allows for the exploration of geometric datasets on mobile, multi-touch devices, such as the iPad. This first version supports STL and VTK geometry files (triangles and quads only). Keep an eye out for the release announcement through Facebook, Twitter, and the VTK Mailing List some time later this month. Then try it out and let us know what you think! |
Slicer 4.0 Gamma RC2 Now Available for Testing
We are pleased to announce the release candidate 2 of Slicer 4.0 Gamma. Many new features have been added recently including additional modules such as "volume rendering" and "sample". Extension modules were also integrated with CDash for easy configuration, submission, and retrieval. RC2 now has a Harden Transform in the data module; a Line/Tube/Gylph display tab in the Tractography Display Module; the ability to select annotations; and improvements to extension support. Additionally, VTK observers can be debugged using the Event Broker module. Become part of the Slicer community and help us test this release. Submit bug reports to the Slicer bug tracker, and provide feedback or ask questions on the Slicer mailing list. |
Take Me Out to the Ballgame Kitware Team in Clifton Park Cheers for Local Baseball Team
On Saturday, June 18th the Kitware team from the Clifton Park office went to see the Tri-City ValleyCats play at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY. It was the Cats' second game of the season and they took on the Vermont Lake Monsters. Before the game officially kicked-off, Kitware team members and their families were welcomed down to the field with a banner to take part in the singing of the national anthem. The first half of the game went quickly back-and-forth, but the ValleyCats gained momentum in the second half and ended up triumphing over the Lake Monsters with a score of 10-0. |
