The Line Item and Parent Power - Together!

The Wood PTA sets an annual budget for a sometimes forgotten line item called "Teacher Support".  This is an imminently flexible and useful line item.  It can be used to cover costs for books needed in classrooms.  It can be used to cover costs for after-school club materials.  It can be used in ways we haven't even thought of yet.  This is PTA money - intended and marked to be spent directly for the school, with the involvement of teachers, parents and students - in the best traditions of the extended learning community creatively supporting the growth of a successful student body.

The Wood PTA as of the last meeting of 2011 added a line item for "Community support."  The details are still being hammered out, but the intent is to provide funds for needy students and families in our community.  The initial support went through the counseling office, to brighten the holidays for families in need (who need not be named, and will remain anonymous - even to the PTA).   The idea and the motivation for this came from the parents assembled for the meeting - speaking and acting directly to improve their communities, to celebrate the diversity, unity, and union of the Wood community.  Do you have any ideas or inspirations you'd like to see put into action?

As we have previously said, we need your ideas, we need students' ideas, teachers' ideas, and any ideas that our school community thinks would benefit the students.  Please, bring your ideas to the next meeting.  If you're too busy to attend, e-mail a board member.  If you're too busy for that, communicate your ideas to a teacher or administrator whenever you're next in school.  If you're too busy for that, ask your student to do it for you.  There's never been a better time to work for changes you'd like to see.  Please help your PTA and let your PTA help you make a difference.

Cultural Arts Tour to Rome & Paris - Spring Break 2012

** Deadline extended to Jan. 5.  Last chance to join! **

Student travel is an investment in your child's future. The Cultural Arts Tour to Rome and Paris is a unique and educational arts, music and design focused travel experience.  We depart March 31 and return April 7.  Our private tour was created by Casterbridge (with our guidance) just for Wood students. This means so much when you are sending your child on an educational trip without a parent - perhaps for the first time.  The tour price includes EVERYTHING.

Visit our Tour Webpage for an Online Presentation and pricing:

http://casterbridgetours.com/index.php/itineraries/privatetour/earl_b_wood_114025/

If you would like more information, please send an email to the PTA's Leigh Dencker at  ladencker@verizon.net or Ashley Tauber at  Ashley_H_Tauber@mcpsmd.org.  Once you register, we will send your child the Casterbridge Journal filled with thoughtful questions about what they will experience in Rome and Paris, so they can begin the learning journey now... and earn the high school credit later!

Don't forget the Highlights! :

  • Students earn high school credit.
  • Price includes admission to EVERYTHING, hotel, airfare, breakfast, dinner.  No "excursion" fees.
  • Cultural arts focus: students experience the art, music, design, and engineering accomplishments of Rome and Paris at sites such as the Coliseum, Eiffel tower, Pantheon, the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Notre Dame, The Louvre... and much more.
  • Our tour is private. No unknown travelers will be added to our Wood Middle School group.
  • Limited group size and plenty of adult chaperones.
  • Parents are welcome on the trip but not required.  Siblings are also welcome to join.

PTA Budget electronic distribution

The PTA budget is available to members in electronic form.  The updated budget and an updated financial report are provided to attendees at every PTA meeting.  In order to save paper, have a better informed membership, and maintain transparency, members can now receive an electronic copy before the meeting.  If you are interested, please e-mail Jack Ward to be placed on the recipients list.  You will then receive a copy via e-mail on the Sunday before each (monthly) PTA mtg.
