Housekeeping Notes
We appreciate all the suggestions and input for this newsletter. Some of these are not within the mission of the PTA, some of them are great ideas, and some of them require more time and effort than our editor can devote. In order to contribute most successfully, please send ready-to-publish or nearly-ready-to-publish text and/or pictures. A brief article or "blurb" is much more likely to make it into the newsletter than a suggestion for a brief article or "blurb". Alternatively, if you are looking for a writing assignment, please contact our editor - he has received some good ideas for articles he has not had time to research.
Thank you to those who have contacted Mr. Ward already, and thanks, in advance, for any future help offered. |

Please enjoy this, our third newsletter of the 2011-2012 school year. Please also continue to share your ideas and input for future newsletters. Questions, comments, and suggestions should go to Jack Ward, our newsletter editor. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Line Item
Wood Middle school has a tradition of holding "Honor Roll Parties". You may already be aware of this (especially if your student made the roll). Students making the honor roll are treated to ice cream, sprinkles, and the warm feeling that comes with this special, cold treat.
You may not be aware that the PTA fully funds these parties. They provide positive reinforcement to students, recognizing their hard work. But more than that, these parties connect the staff, students, teachers, and the PTA - reaffirming everyone's committment to academic success for everyone at Wood.
Do you have an idea for a similar (or even a different) program to contribute to the Wood community? Please bring it to the next PTA meeting. It could receive its own line item!

Parent Power
PTA members, parents who are not members, students, teachers, and community members all contributed to the recent success of the book fair. Whether volunteering, attending, recruiting attendees or volunteers, or organizing the whole show, every person involved was instrumental to this success. As a result, PTA raised $1,147.46, plus an additional $354.49 for the Media Center to purchase new books!
Special thanks is due, of course, to Melissa Jones and Laura Barnes, Book Fair Co-Chairs. However, in keeping with the tradition and purpose of this column, we would like to thank everyone who gave of their time and effort - and drive home the lesson that together, giving what we can, we can make a big impact.
Some folks only had a couple of hours to volunteer, but contacted the co-chairs and scheduled some time at the register. Some folks had no time to spend, but spread the word and made sure their friends and neighbors knew about the book fair. And still others encouraged their children, students and friends to do their holiday shopping at the fair.
Remember - not everyone has to chair an event or spend many hours to contribute. Please give what you can of yourself and your time. No role is too small as to be unnecessary or unappreciated.
And now, Opportunity Knocks...
The PTA is working to make sure our staff feel appreciated and supported this holiday season. We hope to buy a small gift for each Wood staff member for the holidays. The Staff Appreciation Committee is now collecting cash donations - any amount is welcome! $1 per teacher, $5 per teacher, $5 per student, $5 per family, $25 per family.... Please keep in mind that many families will not/cannot give this year.
Donations may be put in the Wood MS Main Office, or mail them to: Wood MS PTA, Attn: Mary Carvajal, c/o Wood Middle School, 14615 Bauer Drive, Rockville, Md. 20853.
Donation deadline: Friday, December 9th.
We will also need help organizing and distributing the gifts, and some baked goods for the distribution day. If you are able to help out, please step forward!
301-871-2107.
Thank you for supporting your child's school and the Wood MS PTA! |

Poetry Slam Artist Gayle Danley
On November 4, the PTA hosted an assembly and workshop for the eighth grade featuring Poetry Slam artist Gayle Danley. Ms. Danley is the 1994 National Individual Poetry Slam Winner, 1996 International Slam Poet Champion and 2006 Young Audiences National Artist Of The Year. Slam Poetry combines movement, voice and drama for an unforgettable spoken word experience. Ms. Danley states, "Slam poetry is about emotion, power. It's about telling your truth. telling your poem out loud." She encourages students write about events that happen in their lives, and to express feelings openly and authentically with poetry. Ms. Danley performed several poems for each of the two assemblies. Her raw and personal performance emphasized themes of loss, love, abuse and beauty, and elicited a wide range of emotions in the students. Bursts of laughter, dead silence and even tears were not uncommon reactions within the eighth grade audience. The Wood Middle School PTA would like to thank Gayle Danley for performing at our school once again. We would also like to thank the eighth grade English teachers, especially Mrs. O'Keiff and Ms. Sato for helping plan the assembly, and Ms. Townsend for working a miracle with the school's schedule to make this happen.
Cultural Arts Tour of Rome and Paris for students
Students of Wood Middle School are invited to one of the most memorable and fun educational trips of their lives-- The Cultural Arts Tour of Rome and Paris. We will visit spectacular sites in Rome such as the Coliseum, Pantheon, the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum. In Paris we will see Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, Chartes Cathedral, and much more. The food is great, the hotels close-in, and the price includes airfare, hotel, breakfast, dinner on the town each night, and admission to every site we visit.
Rome and Paris a have rich and colorful histories of Cultural Arts that go back centuries. Students will not only visit some of the most stunning ancient sites and architectural marvels in Europe, but will be exposed to how Music and Art shape our world. Our tour stands out in a few ways:
- Students earn high school credit. WorldStrides is a travel study school and is accredited by all six major accrediting bodies in the U.S. High school credit will be offered to the participants.
- Cultural arts focus. Specialized tour guides will help students experience the art, design, and architecture of the sites we will see. We will also attend a special musical concert at the Parco della Musica in Rome- the main concert hall is a work of art in itself.
- Our tour is private. No other unknown schools will be added to our group by the tour company. (Only Wood students, teachers, and parent chaperones. Siblings may also attend.)
Tour Leaders: Ashley Tauber, Director of Music at Wood, and Leigh Dencker, Cultural Arts Chair, Wood MS PTA.
For more information about the tour, please join us for the Parent Information Meeting:

PTA Budget electronic distribution
The PTA budget is available to members in electronic form. The updated budget and an updated financial report are provided to attendees at every PTA meeting. In order to save paper, have a better informed membership, and maintain transparency, members can now receive an electronic copy before the meeting. If you are interested, please e-mail Jack Ward to be placed on the recipients list. You will then receive a copy via e-mail on the Sunday before each (monthly) PTA mtg. |
