Housekeeping Notes
We appreciate all the suggestions and input for this newsletter. Some of these are not within the mission of the PTA, some of them are great ideas, and some of them require more time and effort than our editor can devote. In order to contribute most successfully, please send ready-to-publish or nearly-ready-to-publish text and/or pictures. A brief article or "blurb" is much more likely to make it into the newsletter than a suggestion for a brief article or "blurb". Alternatively, if you are looking for a writing assignment, please contact our editor - he has received some good ideas for articles he has not had time to research.
Thank you to those who have contacted Mr. Ward already, and thanks, in advance, for any future help offered. |

Please enjoy this, our second newsletter of the 2011-2012 school year. Please also continue to share your ideas and input for future newsletters. We look forward to hearing from you. Questions, comments, and suggestions should go to Jack Ward, our newsletter editor.
Come out, come out, wherever you are...
Please be sure to attend the next PTA meeting, one week from today - on Tuesday, 08 November, at 7:00 PM. Child care and pizza for the children are provided. Please contact Amy Kines, PTA President, to let her know if you plan to bring any children - so we can be sure to have enough pizza! The schedule is as follows-
6:30-7:00 - Potluck snacks - bring something to share, and enjoy meeting fellow parents.
7:00-7:45 - Meeting.
7:45-8:30 - Mr. Eric Davis, Director of Family and Community Involvement will be our guest speaker, presenting, "Staying on Top of Things without Smothering My Child."
We hope to see you there!
You're It!
We have included in this issue of the newsletter more information on where your PTA funds go to - the programs they support and the difference they make in our community. We have also highlighted where you can make a difference. Whether you have a few hours or just a few minutes each month, there is sure to be something you can do to improve your chiild's experience at Wood and to improve the community at large. Thank you for your support, your energy, and your involvement. |

The Line Item
If you attended a PTA meeting recently and took part in discussions about the budget, you probably remember a line item therein called "Miscellaneous School Support." This covers any number of expenses - usually authorized and at the discretion of our Principal, Ms. Dawson. Funds in this category can be spent on after school activity buses, school supplies, student organization support, or many other things.
The reason for channeling these funds through the Principal (and the school system) have to do with the limits of the PTA authority and legality. Ms. Dawson can contract for services and accept liabilities that the PTA is not equipped to handle. That being said, these funds are not thrown at Ms. Dawson without any guidance. In fact, they're not thrown at her at all.
The specific use of these PTA funds is agreed upon between Ms. Dawson and the PTA prior to the release of funds. (The amount of funds, in fact, is guided by the needs identified and targeted.) Ms. Dawson and the PTA hold regular discussions - most often at the PTA meetings - regarding the needs of Wood students, ideas for new activities and support, and ways to provide for these with PTA funds.
If you want to be a part of the discussion and direction, come on out to the PTA meetings! (More on that in the article immediately below...) |
Parent Power
PTA members generate and bring in ideas for student groups, clubs, and activities. Frequently, these ideas are more fully developed and supported through PTA members and functions.
In some cases, this means receiving funding. As highlighted above, there are creative and effective ways to channel community and PTA funds through the PTA and/or the school system to directly benefit students. Please remember, these decisions are made publicly, including as many people as we can -- And the PTA meeting is the mechanism for assuring this inclusion. But if you don't come out, and don't speak out, your ideas and your input can't be felt. Please come out to the meetings, and please bring your ideas for new activities, improvements, and efforts. And if you absolutely can't make it, feel free to contact any board member to carry your ideas forward on your behalf.
In some cases, supporting an idea or initiative is accomplished through the PTA - without spending a dime... And sometimes even when you can't spare an evening for a PTA meeting, your PTA can help you find a way to contribute. Here comes an opportunity now:
