Greetings!
We are pleased that so many of you opened and enjoyed last month's Wood Word. Nearly 150 of our readers clicked through to find more information on either the Wood MS website or the Wood PTA website! We would love to hear from you if you have news or articles to share and encourage you to click on the email address at the bottom of this mailing if you want to do so.
Starting in September, Jack Ward will be our new editor. Jack will have two children at Wood and one at Flower Valley Elementary; he will provide that wonderful perspective of a parent balancing on the bridge between two schools. Please join us in welcoming Jack to the Wood community! |

President's News
Ever want to really make a difference? Here's your chance! Come to the PTA meeting Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm to vote for next year's PTA officers. This is your chance to voice your opinions and to meet and then vote for next year's leaders. We will also have a business meeting where we finalize plans for the rest of the year, hear about the study circle findings and basically wrap things up for this academic year.
For our students and teachers, however, there are still some spectacular events coming up. The Book Fair, Teacher's Appreciation luncheon, the Wizard of Oz, the 8th grade King's Dominion trip, the end of the year academic celebrations are just some of the upcoming events. Wood keeps our kids on track all the way through June 16!
A special example of the fact that our school is full of talented students striving to make a difference is found in the article below about Clarissa Libertelli. Clarissa is a Wood 7th grader who is a finalist in the nation-wide Doodle4Google contest. Please vote for her artwork at the link provided. Congratulations to Clarissa!
There are lots of opportunities to be involved in your middle school. we need lots of hands to get through the many events of the last several weeks of school. Won't you please join us? Thanks to everyone who works so hard to make Wood Middle School one of the best in the county.

STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
Each year the entire staff at Earle B. Wood works hard to ensure that all students have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn about themselves and the world. And each year the PTA honors that commitment with a special Staff Appreciation luncheon. This year the luncheon will take place on Wednesday, May 25. We are asking parents and guardians to help, in one or more ways, to support this important effort.
If you wish to make a donation to help defray the cost of the luncheon, please send in cash or a check made out to EB Wood PTA. A suggested donation is $20, but $5 is gratefully appreciated as well. Please deliver your donations to the office in an envelope marked Staff Appreciation.
Another way to donate would be to provide a dessert for the luncheon. Like most of us, teachers LOVE desserts!
A third way to contribute would be fresh flowers from your garden to decorate the tables.
Finally, we can use more hands to help on the day of the luncheon. So please, volunteer your time on May 25.
Please contact Marla Rudnick at marlarudnick@yahoo.com if you can help in any of these ways, so we can coordinate a truly great event for those people who are so important in our childrens' lives. |

UPDATE ON THE PERU PROJECT
from Ms. Harvey
We invite everyone to join us in a great adventure -- helping children in the Andes Mountains of Peru! Two years ago, with the help of some Wood staff members, family and friends, I started a project to honor both of my parents (who I lost three years ago) and the legacy they left as educators in the mountains of Peru. This year, Ms. Leef, Mrs. Zangrilli, Ms. Blausner and Mr. Carmi are joining me! We extend an invitation to the whole Wood family to help us with this project because of the great impact our donations will make in so many childrens' lives.
As we did last year, we will travel to the isolated, cold and rainy mountain village with the goal of cultural exchange in mind. We take American games and a little bit of Wood MS with us, and provide these students with school supplies, warm jackets and t-shirts. Many of these children use plastic bags to carry their notebooks in, if they have anything to use at all. It's quite cold in the mountains so the jackets will be a blessing. In exchange, Wood students will have the pleasure of adopting a whole town, but will also learn how children far away from Rockville live and learn.
We plan on raising money for the t-shirts and jackets and with your help we can make this happen! Please be on the lookout for our afterschool fundraisers and let us know if you can help with ideas or donations.
Please contact me here for more information. |

More Cultural Arts News
Junior International Thespian Society
We are so pleased to announce that Wood MS now has its first group of Junior International Thespian Society members, with twenty inducted members. These students have participated in both shows at Wood this year, and put in over 100 hours in the theatre. They will continue to represent the school as we grow the program and work with Rockville High School's International Thespian Society.
Puck's Pals Assembly
On May 9, the PTA sponsored the Puck's Pals assembly for the 7th grade as a supplement to their English classes, which have been focusing on Shakespeare. Puck's Pals educator/actor Natalie McManus and her acting companion recreated scenes from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. A few brave student volunteers agreed to get into costume and participate as actors in the scenes. All students experienced first-hand the writing styles of Shakespeare, such as iambic pentameter and prose. Thank you to Natalie McManus and Puck's Pals for presenting at Wood again this year.
Band & Orchestra
Advanced Band and Orchestra's festival is at the end of May when we take our trip to Busch Gardens.
