Why is it so hard to change?Phenomenon of Homeostasis is a factor
In their pioneering book, The Life We Are Given: A Long-Term Program for Realizing the Potential of Body, Mind, Heart, and Soul, (Putnam, 1995) George Leonard and Michael Murphy set forth the foundational elements of a program of "Integral Transformative Practice". Also nicknamed "ITP", Integral Transformative Practice is based on recent theory and research demonstrating the importance of the "integral growth of the person." ITP draws upon research into the extraordinary capacities of human potential, as well as evolutionary theory, and such programs are designed around the domains of body, mind, heart, and soul. The authors set forth a series of important concepts to understand for anyone seeking to transform their lives through a program of practices affecting and transforming the mind, body, heart and soul. What follows is a brief discussion of each of these ideas. Read more.

Mindfulness Means SLEEP Meditate for a Good Night's Rest We all know that a good night's sleep means a better day ahead. Studies have shown that restful sleep promotes mental, physical, and behavioral health. However stress, anxiety, and depression can easily disrupt sleep. Does Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) positively influence quality of sleep? A 2009 study by Greeson, Brantley, and Ekblad, et. al. reported in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing, involving 103 adults enrolled in an MBSR program, showed "a significant direct association between greater mindfulness and less sleep disturbance". The study's authors concluded "cultivating greater mindfulness, through daily meditation practice for example, may help individuals sleep more soundly, which in turn could promote optimal health and daily functioning."

Why is it so hard to change? (continued)
- Relinquish the "Quick Fix" Our modern culture's "relentless celebration of immediate gratification", well known even in the area of self-development in the form of "big-bang weekend seminars", was seen by Leonard & Murphy as "the most insidious and powerful enemy of our practice". (p. 26-27). However, Leonard & Murphy urge resistance to such pressure and retention of a long-term emphasis.
- Homeostasis. The authors devote a significant number of pages to explaining how our "body, brain, and behavior have a built-in tendency to stay the same within rather narrow limits and to snap back when changed" - a self- regulating tendency necessary for survival. They note that homeostasis "applies to psychological states and behaviors as well as to physical functioning." With the example of the unpleasant physical and mental experiences a long-time sedentary individual might be expected to undergo upon embarking on arigorous jogging program, they illustrate how homeostasis works to keep things the way they are "even if they aren't very good." Homeostasis resists all change, even change for the better. Thus, it is an inevitable force that must be planned for in any ITP program.
- Long Term Regular Practice as an End in Itself. The authors emphasize the necessity of long-term practice (physical, cognitive, spiritual) which itself can provide its own homeostasis, stability, and comfort for people who are undergoing change. Thus, practice for its own sake has inherent value, and need not be viewed solely as a means for achieving an external goal.
- Dedication to Lifelong Learning. To learn is to change, and the lifelong learner is someone who has learned to deal with homeostasis, simply because he or she is doing it all the time. "Lifelong learning is the special province of those who have a profound practice, those who travel the path that never ends."
