As one of our MBSR graduates stated recently, "Mindfulness is in!" It certainly is if you look at the astounding growth in the number of medical studies involving mindfulness over the past few years. More Hospitals Providing Complementary & Alternative Health Services
New Study Shows Patient Demand and
Clinical Effectiveness the Reason
Hospitals across the nation are responding to patient demand and integrating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) services with the conventional services they normally provide, according to the results of a new survey just released by Health Forum, a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association (AHA) and Samueli Institute, a non-profit research organization that investigates healing oriented practices. The survey shows that more than 42 percent of responding hospitals indicated they offer one or more CAM therapies, up from 37 percent in 2007.
Dr. Adam Perlman, Executive Director of Duke Integrative Medicine, commented:
"We were heartened--and not surprised--to read the findings of this study. More and more, we see our patients asking for the very best medicine-both scientific conventional treatment and evidence-based complementary therapies. Duke Integrative Medicine is leading this national effort to responsibly incorporate Complementary and Alternative Medicine into the comprehensive care of every patient."
According to the survey, 85 percent of responding hospitals indicated patient demand as the primary rationale in offering CAM services and 70 percent of survey respondents stated clinical effectiveness as their top reason. Read the full survey here.

MBSR graduate Deborah Lee, PhD, RN, is an Integrative Health Coach, now completing her certification after intensive training through Duke Integrative Medicine. In fact, Duke values Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) so highly it requires all candidates for health coaching certification to complete an MBSR course. This is how we found Debbie! New Video: Author Daniel Goleman
Meditation is Attentional Retraining
What is meditation really? Daniel Goleman, author of dozens of books including Emotional Intelligence and Primal Leadership is one of my favorite authors, scientists, and speakers on the subject of meditation and how it enables us to access the most valuable aspects of our human nature. I came across this short (4 minute) video in which he de-mystifies the ancient healing practice of meditation and illustrates the many ways in which meditation holds promise for improving the quality of our lives and health in our over-stressed modern world.
