LetterGreetings!

KCTS9 is pleased to present Chihuly Outside, a magical one-hour glimpse into the conception and installation of Dale Chihuly's artistic outside work. The most comprehensive of all the Chihuly documentaries, this brand new program focuses on his outdoor and landscape installations. Beginning with Chihuly's early experiments with floating glass on water and the use of ice and neon in large-scale inst gardenallations to early outdoor work at Art Park in New York, the hour culminates with Chihuly's decade-long exploration of outdoor installations at 12 of the preeminent botanic gardens and conservatories in the world.

In addition to the work at these renowned botanic gardens, Chihuly Outside also traces the development of Chihuly's "garden of glass," the Mille Fiori platforms that are assembled from thousands of individual pieces of glass  which represent the culmination in what has been called Chihuly's creation of an "artificial paradise." This metaphor is then extended into the exhibition Chihuly Garden and Glass at the base of the space needle; an exhibition that allowed Chihuly the opportunity to design a garden and glasshouse and take his installation work to new, dazzling heights.

Chihuly Outside is an in-depth documentary that encompasses one of the most vital and long-lasting aspects of Chihuly's career and includes compelling interviews that center his installation work in the broader context of contemporary art. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who is continually searching for new possibilities and innovations for the ways in which art can respond to natural spaces and how  glass, can be used to move, provoke, and inspire its viewers.
