"Kissimmee Basin area ...
that's one of the areas of Florida that you can still go to and,
if you look for it,
it's there, you can see Florida just like it was
seventy-five, a hundred, or more years ago."
- Patrick Smith, A Land Remembered.
NETA is pleased to offer you Kissimmee Basin: The Northern Everglades, a one hour documentary where we will see the exquisite beauty along the Kissimmee River and in the surrounding regions. During that hour, we will get to meet the "Keepers of the Land" and experience a "sense of place" in the vast open spaces of Florida's private and public lands.
Kissimmee Basin is the story of the Northern Everglades. Throughout the centuries, the Everglades have inspired strong emotions and debate among poets and soldiers, politicians and citizens. Its history is broad and sprawling. Although many stories have been told about these special lands--from their drainage to their restoration--few have been told about where it all begins: the Kissimmee River Basin.
Kissimmee Basin invites us to take a trip up the Kissimmee Valley, back through time to discover both the possibility of restoration and the destruction of the Northern Everglades. We learn about the well-reasoned, yet unforeseen consequences of a flood control project that turned the 103-mile long meandering river full of life, into a 52-mile long, multi-million dollar over-engineered channel that drained the surrounding wetlands, caused the disappearance of large flocks of wading birds, and caused a significant decline of an abundant freshwater fishery.ecosystem. We see how restoration and protection of this vast, watery landscape may well hold the key to restoration of the Greater Everglades
Kissimmee Basin is produced by Elam Stoltzfus, Live Oak Production Group. It is presented by WUSF and distributed by NETA. Underwritten by Southwest Florida Water Management District, AT&T and The Felburn Foundation, local underwriting is permissible.
