A note from Patti Ries, Mill City Commons
Program Coordinator
Did You Know?
October is National Audiology Awareness Month.
According to the American Academy of Audiology, hearing loss affects 9 million Americans over the age of 65. As we age, hair cells in the inner ear may become less sensitive, resulting in distorted sounds. The majority of older Americans with hearing loss do not use hearing aids. Hearing aid users report significant improvements in social relationships and a greater sense of independence. Consult your physician if you are experiencing hearing changes such as needing to turn up TV or radio volume, problems hearing on the telephone, or difficulties hearing conversations. CaptionCall has developed a phone for those with hearing loss. "CaptionCall uses voice recognition technology and a transcription service to quickly provide written captions of what callers say on a large, easy-to-read screen. It works like a regular telephone - simply dial and answer calls as usual - speak and listen using a phone handset like always. The captioning service is free. Captioning is provided by CaptionCall and paid through a fund administered by the Federal Communications Commission."
